Learning Actions / Advancing Careers

By Dark Bunny Lord, in WFRP Rules Questions

Ok so still reading through the rules and had a few questions:

1. When spending creation points or advancements to learn an action are you limited on which actions you can learn? Or can you merely pick "any" action from the deck pile? There doesn't seem to be any distinguishing notes on each card that says what you need to learn that action with an advancement/creation points and instead only requirements that may hinder you from using it (typically what's equipped, range, etc)

2. When spending creation points on skills/actions does these apply to your character advancement and thus class completion? If so do they thus hinder your ability to take more (ie the limitations of times you may take a certain type of advance the advance scheme)?

1. As per RAW there is no limitation, however some GMs such as myself like to put restrictions on some of them based on the traits for example ''Ancester" is only available to dwarf characters "way of the sword" is only for sword master IMO it make your career more important.

2. In character creation the skills and actions do NOT count as part of your career completion and also if you take the dedication bonus the skills you train do not get the free specialisation only the skills you train during you career..

2. actions selected during advancement count toward your career completion as long as you haven't exceeded the number of actions dictated on the career card. (do not count the actions selected at character creation). skills selected during advancement count toward career completion as long as the skills are from those listed on the career card and do not exceed the number of skills dictated on the career card. (do not count the skills selected at character creation).

Okay so two contradicting answers on #2 anyone have a quote from the RAW to clear this up?

Ok so just to clarify (now that I've read a bit more)

When you take advances such as to stats, skills, actions, or talents you right them down on the back of your character sheet. They go into the career advancement section if they match that careers advance scheme (or match one of the 4 basic that all classes share on the back of the character sheet) and if they don't hit either that advancement or those "always" choices, then they go in the non career advances.

The question is are these only placed on the back of the character sheet when taken from "advances" earned in game or do they also get written during character creation when spending your creation points?

Hope that clarifies things a bit and if someone can quote the raw (or at least give me a majority opinion) it would be grateful.

Oh and one other question of course was that if you take the skills (that you can only normally take once) with character creation points, would this then limit your ability to take them again as advances. If they applied (on initial take) to your career advancement then I would understand if they couldn't be taken again in that career, if not however I would assume the initial creation points spent learning them wouldn't count towards that 1 time limit.

Actually, they both said the same thing. New Zombie's answer was just slightly wordier and 'muddier'.

Actions and advances acquired during creation do not count towards the 10 advances needed to complete a career.

As such, actions and advances acquired during creation will not be recorded in the advancement portion of the character sheet.

They also do not count as skills trained during the career, for the purposes of the dedication bonus/career completion free specializations. (They had to have been trained as one of the 10 for the career completion)

Yes, skills trained during creation do prevent you from training those skills again. Skill training has a maximum equal to the PCs current rank (additionally, a maximum of 3 as well). There is no restriction on how many times you can train a skill while in a rank, merely the total number of training vs current rank. For example, a Rank 2 PC that was not previously trained in Weaponskill could train Weaponskill twice during rank 2, to get to his maximum of 2 (equal to his current rank).

sorry according to the rule book there is,
page 35 under both

character rank -
a character may only train an individual skill once per rank. Once the character has ascended to the next rank, he may acquire an additional level of training in his skills.

and general career advances -
Skill Training or Specialisation: This advance allows a character to train in one of the skills listed on his career card. A single skill can only be trained once per character rank . If one of those skills is already trained, the character can choose to instead spend the advance to acquire a specialisation for the appropriate skill.

Ah my mistake, somehow I overlooked the parenthesis "do not count those taken during character creation" notes. Anyways thanks for the answers, also missed the "1 skill training per rank" note in the rulebook so that's helpful.

Ah. My mistake. That's what I get for going off of memory instead of double-checking the rulebook. I occasionally get something wrong. Except for being limited to training a skill once per rank, the rest of my answer stands.
