now a guardian wolf question!

By darkpony, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

me again!

"Creature, Direwolf only. No attachments. Deadly. Challenges: Pay the rest of Guardian Wolf's cost to bring it out of Shadows, knelt, as a participant on your side in any challenge in which you control at least 1 participating Lord or Lady character."

I do not understand what happend to guardian wolf in subsequent rounds once he is in play. he becomes just a 2 str military? or can he continue to be used in power/intrigue challenges if i have a lord/lady out?

also in the round he comes out of stealth he can be used in multiple challenges?

I don't understand your confusion.

The ability to jump into a challenge requires you to take him out of shadows. Once he's out of shadows, you can't trigger that ability - it won't get used again (unless you can put him back into shadows). That refers to the whole ability - everything from participating in a challenge with lord or lady to coming out of shadows knelt. His main strength is the surprise factor (you can let him join a challenge after defenders have been declared) of +2 str *and* deadly.

And the same goes for multiple challenges; the ability requires that you put him into play, knelt, as a participant in A challenge. Once this ability has resolved, it won't be triggered again. If you stand him, you can use him as a regular character in a subsequent challenge, of course...

He's still a S2 Military with Deadly, and a Direwolf thereafter.

After he is out of shadows the wolf is indeed just a str 2 military with deadly.

You cant use his ability again unless you have a way to have him put back in shadows and then you can pay the gold to trigger his ability.

Under normal circumstances he cant be used in another challenge as he comes into play knelt. If you can stand him ( 'at night they howl' springs to mind) and you havent used your military challenge yet (or you can use 2 or more) then he is good to go. Or if you have a card effect that would cause knelt characters to be declared as attackers/defenders then he could participate.

*disclaimer, im almost certain to be wrong about something.

thanks!

so best case use of Guardian Wolf is a one time kill defending an intrigue or power challenge where the attacker doesn't have anything deadly. i just dont think im using him effectively enough and thought i might be misunderstanding how he works.

Another misconception; a deadly character on the defence doesn't kill anyone. Only if the attacking player has more characters with deadly does anyone have to "kill" a character (double check your rulebook).

He is a very useful character to have as he can be a "Surprise" deadly on the offense (after defenders have been declared), or a surprise difference in challenge strength (like an endless endurance) to change the outcome of a challenge. In decks that attempt to keep challenge control (Seige of Winterfell really needs to win it's military challenges, Bolton has to be very careful which challenges it loses, and Tully wants to try hard not to lose any challenges), it can mean more than just not losing a character to claim. Not to mention that the occasional card in shadows can stop a Robert (KL) or Knight of the Flowers (KL) in his tracks.

On top of that, the direwolf trait has good synergy with a great many stark cards.

right right. on defense his deadly does nothing.

Well, it could cancel out an opponent's Deadly. That's certainly something.

Very useful to defend against a single deadly attacking character (it can save Catelyn, for instance).
