How do YOU pronounce Maester?

By dcdennis, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Option 1: My-ster

Option 2: May-ster (my choice)

Option 3: Master

Option 2 for me

Yeah option two. Oddly enough, a metamate pronounces it as ME ay ster. Really weird. lol

Option 2

Two, for sure. Isn't that how they did on the HBO series as well?

Ha, not sure how he got that. Dislexic maybe ?

Option one. I pronounce it like the German "meister." Though I pronounce pretty much every other "ae" in the books as "ay," so I realize I'm being inconsistent. I think having heard "mayster" so much lately I'm starting to shift that way.

IMO, the 'ae' should be pronounced the same way in both Maester and Shae. I have never heard anything other than "shay", so it's gotta be "mayster" in my mind.

Option 2 because that is how HBO did it when the show was on.

Option 2 as well. I need to go back and watch the HBO show, because although the majority of characters pronounced it like that, for some reason I seem to remember at least one character consistently pronouncing it differently...

erick has the right of it. the audio books are also may-ster.

I've always gone with option 1, probably because of my background studying German.

When I was reading the books, the closest approximation I came up with was the word "Maestro."

Also, I pronounce "Frey" as "Fry." and "Catelyn" as "Kate-lynn"

As you might be able to gather, I don't particularly care how HBO pronounces things. :D

He also pronounces car as "core" ,Christmas as "I hate children" and 1+1=3 . As you might be able to gather, he doesn't care about what's actually correct.

By that logic, Gregor Clegane LOVES Christmas! Who knew?

The latter two are funny, but I don't get the first one.

Whenever I encounter "ae", I always follow the Latin pronunciation. In Latin, "ae" is always pronounced as "e". So, "mester" for me.

Option 4: Smith.
