I don't think it's comparable. Sword Brethren are basically the BT version of Veterans. Honor Guard are even higher-ranked than Ultramarine Veterans, being basically the bodyguard of the Chapter Master.
Emperors Champion Mark of Distinction secondary advancement, and quick storm/combat shield question.
Ah, okay. I've been looking through Lexicanum, but I can't find anything that specifically says that only Sword Brethren can become the Emperor's Champion. Perhaps it's in the BT codex or something?

Hm, I'm not seeing it in the codex. Maybe I only thought such was the case.
Either way, we are totally hijacking this thread. Haha, sorry!
Well, I considered some of the OP's proposals for the Emperor's Champion weaponry to be overpowered to the point of brokenness and utter gear-disparity. So that's on-topic.

A Marshal is more of a mix of Captain and the Chapter Master of a particular Crusade only.
I'd say the absolute closest thing for the BT's would be a Castellan, since they're chosen from among the Sword Brethren, who are essentially the 1st Company of the Black Templars. Making them kinda, '1st Company +1', while not being full Captains.
