Some questions

By Yusaku, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi,

here is some questions that came up during our last game:

1)Is renown considered trigered effect? We had Conclace attacking. If Brienne of Tarth (Princes of the Sun) defends to a power attack can the Conclave trigger renown?

2)There is in play Threat of the North plot card and two Maesters of Last Hearth. The player of the Maesters of Last Hearth is the first player and the player of the Threat of the North is the second. If the first player plays a Carrion Bird (creature) will be immidietly discarded or will take the two +1 modifiers of the Maesters?

3)There is in play again Threat of the North. If someone plays Flame-Kissed to a character with 2 str does he get discarded or get killed?

4) If someone cancels a Forever Burning with a Paper Shields does Forever Burning goes to discard or dead pile?

Thanks in advance!

Two other questions from a beginner :

1. Valar Morgulis : I'm not too sure about the way I can save my characters from this. It says "kill all characters". There is no "cannot be saved" words, so technically, I can save them. So, can I use a duplicate card to save a unique character ? Is there another legal option to save characters ?

2. Deadly keyword : Then again, not sure about the rule. It is said "the defending player must choose and kill a defending participating character after the challenge resolves". How is it truly working ? And a subquestion, what happen when Robb (core) do a military challenge with a deadly character ?

Thank you

There's lots. You can use any effect that says "save from being killed". Nymeria, Lightbringer, Gilded Plate, Bodyguard, Parmen Crane, Iron Mines, Iron Cliffs, Thoros of Myr, Maester Wendamyr, Risen from the Sea, Ser Davos, Viserys, Maester Aemon, Ghost etc. etc.

To get a deeper understanding of these issues, you might want to have a look at the FAQs. You can find them in the support section of this site.

What you need is the flowcharts on pp.18-20. Don't worry, it looks worse than it is.

Let's say I win a MIL challenge against you with Claim 1. I have more characters with the Deadly keyword than you.

In the Framework Action Window when the challenge resolves, there's four Framework Events (p.20):

1. Determine winner of challenge
2. Challenge result is implemented
3. Reward for unopposed challenge is awarded
4. Renown is awarded

In step two of these, you choose one of your characters to die.

After all these steps are through, passive effects happen (see p.18). Deadly resolves with the passive effects, so now you kill one of your participating characters for Deadly. If the character killed for claim was your only defender, or if the challenge was unopposed, no one dies for Deadly.

After Passives are resolved, there's the opportunity to play Responses (again, page 18). Robb's ability is a Response, so now I can trigger it and kill another of your characters.

All characters killed in the process stay on the table and can use their effects until step 6 of the action window, but they cannot be removed from play a second time (see rules for Moribund, FAQ p.16)

HTH.

I believe the Core Set Rules says that a canceled Deathbound event cancels the Deathbound, too. So it will go to the discard pile.

You...believe? OK. Who the hell are you and what are you doing logging on with ktom's account!?

Thank you for the answers. I did print the chart that say when you can do action but really, I must study it ! lengua.gif So, if I understand well your answer, if Robb attack with a deadly character (and there is no deadly on the other side) there is a possibility that 3 characters die ? ARG !

Yeah, I know that situation probably won't happen (nobody is that stupid !), but I only wanted to know if my rule understanding is OK. It seems right, thought. Thank you again with your help. happy.gif

Another one !

Tywin Lannister (core) : "at the beginning of the marshalling phase, take 2 gold from treasury and place on Tywin Lannister." There is 2 question from that ability.

1- If I'm reading right, this ability is not an option. I must place 2 gold on him, right ?

2- In the taxation phase, it is said that :"all player [...] move any unspent gold tokens in their gold pool back to the treasury." What happen with the Tywin ability with the gold on him ? Do we keep them for the next round ? Tricky !

1- correct.

2- Are the gold tokens in your gold pool? No. They're on Tywin. They stay.

Note that, for the same reason, they do not count for Dominance.

Another one !

Joffrey Baratheon (core) : "Response: After a Lord or Lady character is killed, Joffrey Baratheon claims 1 power. (Limit 3 times per round)." What happen if a lord die, but is save by a response/event card ? Does Joffrey claims 1 power because a lord die, but did not go in the dead pile ?

a Lord didn't die, he was saved from death, a save effect doesn't allow the character to die and than resurrect them, it saves the character from being killed in the first place

The power of blood (core) : Noble characters cannot be killed. with this rule, when i loose a challenge, can I choose a noble for dying and be save by this plot or it's simply impossible to choose a noble ?

Calepin said:

I'll let the FAQ answer that:

"A character that cannot be killed/saved/etc.
may not be chosen for that effect." (page 10).

So, if you have two characters, one with the Noble crest and one without, and you need to choose one to die, you *must* choose the one without the crest while Power of Blood is revealed.

But what if I have only nobles in play ? Nobody die ?

That's right. Good for you. happy.gif

That's tricky, but it's hardly possible with all the needs of a good balanced deck. But I'm sure it can be usefull, somehow ! gui%C3%B1o.gif

One of my joust losses was to JerusalemJones, playing a Noble power rush deck. It was brutal. And yes, he was running 2 copies of that plot.

Tywin Lannister (core) : "at the beginning of the marshalling phase, take 2 gold from treasury and place on Tywin Lannister." There is 2 question from that ability.

Well, I did forgot one thing that I did not understand with this ability. My problem came with the word treasury. I was faces with a 2 way problem

a) I'm taking 2 gold before I count any gold from my plot and locations.

b) I count my golds for my plot and locations. Then, I pick 2 gold from that number and put them on Tywin

This misunderstanding do a huge difference for what I will have in my marshalling phase.

Planning ahead (core) : "Skip the taxation phase this round". Did it means everyone keep their gold this round or only one player keep his gold ?

1) A. is the correct answer. The treasury is the gold no one is using. The gold you get from your plots and locations is your gold pool. Tywin takes gold from the treasury, and can be used as though it is in your gold pool. But it isn't in the pool, so it cannot be taxed and will not count for dominance.

2) The whole phase is skipped. No one is taxed.

Thank you for the answers. Well, I guess Tywin Lannister is more usefull than I thought ! lengua.gif

Ilyn Payne vs Renly's Courtier

Marshalling: Kneel Ser Ilyn Payne to choose and kill a character with STR 2 or lower.

Any Phase: Kneel Renly's Courtier to choose a non-unique character. Until the end of the phase, treat that character as though its printed text box were blank (except for Traits)

To be sure I understand timing rules, if I want to use Renly Courtier to nullify Ilyn Payne ability, I must be the first player, then use the trigger ability of the Courtier in the start of the marshalling phase. So because Ilyn Payne have a trigger ability, and not a response ability, he can't do it to kill my renly's courtier this phase. Did I got it right ?

Next question. Are boon attachments can be attach to characters with the keyword "no attachments" ?

Your understanding of the timing is correct, however, Renly's Courtier can't be used on Ser Ilyn Payne - Renly's Courtier requires a non-unique character target.

You've answered your own second questions. No Attachments. Boon Attachments are attachments. And characters with "No Attachments" can have "no" of them, of any kind. I'm not sure why you'd think boons would somehow be special.

Out of curiosity, what made you think the trait "Boon" somehow created an exception to "No attachments"?
