Beware the Rifts (A Session Report)

By The Professor, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Strange occurrences around the otherwise quiet city of Arkham and the neighboring towns of sleepy Dunwich and sea-misted Kingsport had baffled police for several weeks. Nobody dared visit their lost relatives at the Graveyeard, nor did children play in the Woods. Peculiarly dressed men and women were found now in these locales, dancing around large bonfires at all hours of the night. Capturing and questioning the denizens of these erstwhile peaceful places proved useless. Muttering in a language no one understood, including some of the esteemed members of Miskatonic University's Linguistic Studies department, left authorities scratching their heads as to the reasons behind these secretive, cultish activities.

Intrepid individuals, turned investigators, sought to solve the riddles associated with the strange occurrences now plaguing their city. The Young Entertainer, Marie Lambeau; the Magician, Dexter Drake; the Gangster, Michael McGlen; and the Psychologist, Carolyn Fern steeled their nerves in preparation for the unknown horrors from beyond.

For Marie Lambeau, she managed to accumulate enough clues to seal two gates after traversing the Other Worlds of The City of the Great Race and The Dreamlands. During her travels, she managed to acquire a number of spells, kill a cultist who stood in her way, and passes her personal story, conferring a great gift ~ the ability to again tear a Doom Token from the AO's Doom Track. Despite Azathoth's long Doom Track, Marie took full advantage of tearing two tokens from it and keeping the investigators alive a bit longer.

Dexter had augmented his spell book quite considerably before heading to Dunwich. In doing so, he sealed the Gate to Another Dimension, sending a Color Out of Space back to its point of origin. While he didn't pass his personal story, he managed to utilize his spells quite well, defeating a Mummy, a cultist, a Formless Spawn, and a Dark Young. While he never had the opportunity to become Blessed during the adventure, it would have not remained long on him as he been Tainted during his wanderings around Arkham.

The Gangster, Michael McGlen had eventually traveled to Kingsport as a Rift opened and began to wreak havoc across the town, depositing monsters almost every other turn and eventually adding three Doom Tokens to the Doom Track (in addition, several Mythos cards revealed no open gates but two Doom Tokens added to the Doom Track). He managed to seal a gate to Another Time and defeat an incredible number of earthly and other-worldly beings, including a Dark Druid, a cultist, a maniac, a Ghoul, a Dhole, a Nightgaunt, a Byakhee, a Dark Young, and a Shoggoth. His ability to destroy these creatures helped him pass his personal story and keep, his now elevated Sanity at near maximum level during the balance of the game.

Finally, Carolyn certainly did her best to aid the groule through her ability to restore sanity seal one Gate to the City of the Great Race (and close another to Lost Carcosa). Her frailty cost her dearly as she received an Infected Wound (Injury) during one of her battles, though she did manage to destroy a Ghost, a Ghast, and a Zombie. Her Visions benefit was not used to its fullest extent and most likely led to the Investigators ultimate defeat. While she did pass her personal story and use the 3 clue tokens to great use (sealing a gate), her Blessed status proved fleeting, lasting only a few turns.

Overall, the Investigators did quite well, with Marie removing two Doom Tokens, three of the investigators passing their respective personal stories, and sealing five of the necessary 6 gates. Unfortunately, a Mythos card which immediately opened a Rift in Kingsport [yes, I play by different rules governing when tokens are added to the Rift Tracks and where the Rifts appear], coupled with two Mythos Cards adding two Doom Tokens apiece proved far too difficult, causing a situation from which the investigators could not quite recover. In hindsight, as Carolyn had the Visions benefit for quite some time, either Marie or Dexter should have jumped into another open gate, and upon exiting take a turn or two discarding spells to acquire the necessary number of clue tokens to seal the sixth gate. The game lasted for 19 Mythos cards (a shade over 3 hours).
