I never played Descent first edtiion - though I did see it played once at a con.

Should I bother to pick up first editon stuff or just wait and purchase the second edtion and start from there?

That's a question that really can't be answered by anyone but you. The easiest path is 2e at this stage, but no one has seen it.

If you can find 1e cheap then I will say its a great game.
