Birdwatching in the Woods

By Esto, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

An encounter in the Historical Society offers the investigator to go birdwatching in the Woods & choose between 2 encounter cards at the new destination. However, there is an open gate in the Woods. Do you still get to do this encounter 1st before entering the gate into the OW?

Negative ~ if you choose to go, you arrive at the Woods, find a Gate, and enter (as it's the Arkham Encounter Phase; you generally DO NOT enter Gates on Movement Phase). You DO NOT have the encounter at the Woods, as the Gate replaces the location.

That is my understanding. You move to a location with a gate, and have your encounter—which, for an open gate, is to enter the gate. The "draw 2" clause is irrelevant here.

RIP birdwatchers. May their sacrifices be quick and clean.

Well it's kind-of relevant, it's just that the enter gate clause overrides both cards so you get your choice of entering the gate or entering the gate.

Well, your options are to enter the gate, or enter the gate with a smile on. Your choice, bucko.
