Best Balanced Scenario or Best Scenario in Favour of Investigators

By Dumon, in Mansions of Madness

Hi!

I played this game now for three times (only three - yes, I know), and I will play it again soon. However, I usually have changeing players, and most of them are new to the game. So, the problem I encountered through the first three plays was that I as the Keeper have obviously the best knowledge of the game. And therefore it was not very hard to win those games.
Now I wonder - how can I make it easier for a starting groupe without pinning my own arm to my back. And I realized that most of the szenarios are easier for a Keeper to win. Easier in that his mistakes are not as bad for his winning chances as mistakes for the Investigators are.
So I am looking for the scenario that is (in your opinion) best balanced. Or that is easier for the investigators. So that they have a realistic chance in first play. And the second scenario then can be any other...
I do so far own the base game (obviously) and Seasons of the Witch.

Best wishes,
Dumon

SPOILER

I think you can play the second story, the objective in which the investigators have to kill the cthonian. I've played it two times and the investigators killed the cthonian in both the games!

I have had the opposite happen: when I Keep with the Cthonian in The Inner Sanctum, I always win. You could give it a try though.

My advice is using The Fall of House Lynch's 1B scenario (Keeper has to collect sample tokens to make a shoggoth). Also Season of the Witch's 1A (the Keeper has to drive all investigators insane). The easiest one to win for investigators is Green-Eyed Boy's 1B. Not only do you, as Keeper, have to hope someone goes into the Freezer but also only ONE investigator has to walk out for ALL INVESTIGATORS TO WIN (I honestly don't know why they don't errata it, as the flavor text makes it sound like the rest are trapped in the house forever, idk).

I have only played it once (I was Keeper), but from what I can tell with my experience and only one session, 'Til Death Do Us Part is an excellent expansion, as it for once makes it challenging for the Keeper to win. This is both due to the Objective's Keeper restrictions (that I have viewed in the one scenario) and the map has much higher odds of receiving items versus "Nothing of Interests." What I have seen time and time again is disappointment with exploring a room for their to be nothing in it. This expansion eliminates that.

I would pick up 'Til Death Do Us Part. I like it a lot.

Also, Green-Eyed Boy in general lets you "turn" an investigator into a lackey, making that one player win when you win too (or lose, if you plan on losing lol).

Someone on Boardgamegeek has eviscerated Silver Tablet for being impossible for the investigators to lose.

Really!? I have found it to be one of the most difficult and unforgiving. I will have to check that out...

There is the review for Silver Tablet mentioned above. I would mostly agree with that review except I have played it three or four times and only once did I come close to winning as an investigator.

This forum may also want to ask which scenarios are most balanced under what investigator allotment: amount of investigators may be a strong trigger factor for how hard the game gets and which map you play at, but I am not that big of an expert to answer that question. I will say that The Fall of House Lynch is not the best suited for a large crowd of investigators (nothing to pick up quick). All I can say is if investigators easily explored all rooms and are still running around to unlock clues, then their special abilities and items are really going to be what sets them apart for surviving the adventure (Jenny Barnes and Gloria Goldberg can gain skill points as their actions; Michael McGlen is super at combat and tough).

The investigators who I continuously see win are Joe Diamond, Michael McGlen, Harvey Walters, and Jenny Barnes. My personal favorite is Joe Diamond, followed very closely by McGlen. Quick-finding clues usually wins half-of-the-time, but if it doesn't then I go slow and steady using McGlen with Dynamite and his mental card with 8 Willpower.

Best scenario for what you are asking though I believe is 'Til Death Do Us Part. I really recommend that one. I've beat it once as investigator and barely, barely won as Keeper.
