Alternative Dragon Token System

By lost.prophet, in Talisman Home Brews

After several Dragon games I've come to a conclusion : with the standard system every game will be dominated by the amount of scales on the board, some players will be very strong and race after dragons while the others just stand aside and look. I want adventure cards back!

I thought that having a 50% of the scales on the board, comparing to the standard ruling, is more than enough.

2 possible variations:

  • Coin Flip - Every time a Dragon Lord has got 3 scales on its card everything goes as the normal way, except that you have to flip the dragon scale before placing it on the board : if the dragon is face up you have to place it, instead you have not. Following that way will result in having half the scales on the board.
  • Die Roll - Every time a Dragon Lord has got 3 scales on its card everything goes as the normal way, except that you have to roll a die (in that case a player can still use a fate or add values according with spells or similar) and follow the result table below. The point is choosing if placing a scale could be more positive or negative, that is choosing if placing a scale is the upper or lower half of a die roll possible values.
    2 possible sub-variations again:
    - For a Coin Flip fashion you can use those results : 1-3=place it ; 4-6= dont.
    - For a more casual fashion you can use those instead : 1=dragon rage ; 2-3=place it ; 4-5=dont ; 6=claim it!

Tell me what you think about that!

Sorry for my english, I tried my best!

After playing a few games, this is our current Alternate Rules for the Dragon Expansion (including use of tokens).

1. Players navigate through the Inner Region (original board, not the Dragon overlay), and must slay the Dragon King before taking control of the Crown of Command.

2. At game set-up, roll dice to determine which of the Dragon Lords is the acting Dragon King. Place the three Dragon Lord cards in the center of the board, with the Dragon King on top. Re-arrange the Dragon Lord cards as needed so that only the current Dragon King is visible.

3. After rolling a 6 for movement, players randomly draw a Dragon Token with the following results:

o Dragon Scales – Place the token immediately on the square where the character is standing. The Dragon Lord matching the colour of the token is crowned the new Dragon King. If a Dragon Scale is already on the square, replace it with the new token. However, if the new Dragon Scale is the same colour as the existing token, place the new token on the next available counter-clockwise square.

o Dragon Rage – Suffer Rage effect of current Dragon King.
o Dragon Strike – Draw two additional tokens.
o Dragon Slumber – Place on any upturned Dragon enemy card, to indicate that the creature is asleep and its strength & craft are reduced by 3 for one encounter.

4. Once the above actions are complete, the character moves 6 spaces and continues with their turn as normal.

5. Characters ending their movement on a square with a Dragon Scale always ignore regular board instructions, instead drawing a card from the corresponding Dragon Lord deck (exception: if an enemy from the same deck is already on the square, encounter the existing card and do not draw another). As always, players may choose to encounter another character located on the square rather than the square itself.

Defeated Dragon deck enemies are kept as trophies. In addition, the corresponding Dragon Scale is removed from the board, and placed in the player’s hand (only tokens that match the deck of a defeated enemy can be claimed).

6. Each Dragon Scale claimed by the player adds 1 to their character’s attack score against encounters with the corresponding Dragon Lord / minions, and can be discarded to avoid the effects of Dragon Rage.

7. Upon reaching the Inner Region, players must kill the Dragon King in order to seize the Crown of Command and begin casting the Command spell. Once the Dragon King is killed, the remaining Dragon Lords flee the game and no additional dragon tokens are drawn. Defeated Dragon Lords are not kept as trophies.
