Weathering

I want to do something like this with my mechs. Simple & cool, with not a lot of extra color splashed on--make it look like a tank that's seen better days.

If I wanted my walker to look like the one in the above picture, what would I do? How do you get weathering effects like that?

The rust can be applied as brown paint with a small torn bit of foam. Also make sure you use washes to darken the cracks.

I've used Mig Productions Effects (rainmarks, grease & oil, light rust, standard rust) and find they work great. There are other ways to do the weathering, but I enjoyed using these products.

For mud, I stipple on bestial brown and then a little bit of snake leather over top of it.

For scratches I paint black where I want the chip/scratch to be, and then a metallic paint (like boltgun metal) inside where I painted the black.

I'm quite happy with the results.

Do you think that for the whitening effect above s/he just drybrushed white?

No, its probably done as follows:

Take a paint with a known solvent, (Valejo model color white would be great as its soluble in Alcohol and the Dust primer is not).

Then lightly brush on the white. Oonce its dry use alcohol and a cotton swab or brush and "Erase" the paint. do it in a downward direction and make sure you leave some behind. Don't use too much alcohol.

This is a common techneque for painting faded white wash.

Awesome, thanks! I'm definitely going to try this.
