What a Beaut Game

By Sibowitz, in Blood Bowl: Team Manager

I have always been a Board Game lover since I was a kid, but now I have a son (10 years old), I've tried to encourage this in him as well. we have played Descent & Runebound together (and with others) and enjoyed it but Blood Bowl & Death Angel have been fantastic from our interaction point of view.

We played our first BB game tonight and after running through a few demo games to get a handle on the rules we played our first no holds barred game and I won (never give a 10yo an even break) 29-30 fans but he won the Blood Bowl Cup.

What a GREAT game. Simple, fun and it has sucked us both in. What a better experience than to bond with your son over a game and thoroughly enjoy it at the same time. I thank FFG for pumping these absorbing games out, that have made a father/son experience all the better.

Cheers FFG

How would you compare BB:TM to Death Angel? (if that's possible)

I really like both but BB is king at the moment.

DA is a deadly game but being cooperative its uniqueness and fun value comes from working together and using the different teams abilites to mesh a strategy together and the interaction that comes with it. A lot of high fives go round the table when the flamer takes out that final swarm and we are yet to see Kaphael (we call him Ka-Fail) survive a game or do anything meaningful.

BB is a competitive game but fun because so much can happen in a simple fashion. Matchups that you think you have done & dusted can be snatched away with a lucky or unlucky cheat token...I lost the Blood Bowl Tournament on just this basis when I had my star player 'ejected' by my only cheat token as the last action to see who won that tourney. Didnt even need it to win but had to reveal it....my sons shrieks of delight were dulled when we tallied the fan values to show a 1 fan game win to me. But we both loved the experience and started setting up the next game straight away.

Both are great and I dont mind playing either and thoroughly recommend BOTH.

I have both games - both great - both totally different gaming experiences.

Similarities - Both are card games derived from a board/miniatures based game. Both are card driven with cards representing the friends, foes and actions. Both are fun. Both are fairly short games.

Differences - Much more profound

First up BB:TM is competitive, you are trying to beat the other players. Death Angel is cooperative, you are collectively trying to beat the game.

BB:TM you are choosing where to put your playing pieces and throwing of a series of actions you gather through the game around them. In Death Angel your pieces are less mobile and are the target while the enemy run around while your action choices are static through the game.

Death Angel is very hard, and can be frustrating as you work out how to carry out a mission and best marshall your resources against a fixed objective, whereas BB:TMis easier to work out how the game interacts, the skill is in outthinking your opponents. Both do have an element of resource management.

BB:TM is a game of accumulation, Death Angel is a game of attrition.
