Questions regarding magic spells

By Malte7, in WFRP Rules Questions

Again me,

another bugger... :-)

I haven't had the pleasure of a wizard in my group yet. Anyhow, some questions as I am reading trough the rules... yes, to much time.

1. As a wizard, how do you get your spells? Do you "buy" them like regular actions?

2. If yes, then you are limited by the amount of spells you can buy by your career advancement options, right?

3. I read that you can specialize in spells level 1, level 2 etc. What does that mean? Do I have to specialize in a level before I can buy any spells from that level? Or, do I get a bonus when casting spell of a level I specialized in?

4. Or, do I have to be a level two character to be able to buy a level 2 spell?

I couldn't find satisfying answers at all. Thanks for you help

1. You buy them like other actions, with the exception of Cantrip, Channel Power, Counterspell, and Magic Dart, which all Apprentice Wizards get at character creation (Player's Guide, 116). That means your mundane "bag of tricks" is going to be rather limited because almost every wizard will spend every action on spells.

2. Yes, that is my understanding of it.

3. The specialisation just gives you the bonus fortune die on Spellcraft checks, just like any other specialisation.

4. Ordinarily, that's the case. You can, however, buy a spell above your rank at the cost of one extra advance per spell rank above your character's rank (Winds of Magic, p. 34).

If you start as a mage, you gain these benefits:

-Every spell action card labeled as basic (channel power, cantrip, magic dart, counterspell)

-Spellcraft and Channel Power advanced skills

Right now, there are four levels of wizard, apprentice, acolyte and wizard, every one of them is matched with level of spells:

-apprentice is level for level one spells

-acolyte is for level two spells

-wizard is for level three spells

You may purchase spells from your level and levels below just like normal actions, for one advancement.

You may purchase spells above your rank for one additional advancement for each rank you don't have.

As for specialisation (I may be wrong on this one), there are no specialisations for specific levels of spells, but for whole lore of magic, like "Lore of Fire" or "Lore of Metal". These are Spellcraft specialisations, and provide single fortune die to every roll you make using this lore of magic.

The career levels and spell ranks are not an exact match

depending on how you spend your xp as an apprentice(level 1 wizard) you can finish the career as a rank 2 character and if you you haven't filled in all your action card advances you can take rank 2 spells for 1 advance
and again depending on how you spend your xp as an acolyte(level 2 wizard) you can be up to a rank 4 character before you leave the career for wizard career(level 3 wizard)
