Question about the Contest.

By DrgnScorpion, in Deathwatch

Does the 1,000 word limit for the captain have to include a statblock?

I certainly hope not - I already submitted mine and didn't include a statblock. I would think that if your Watch-Captain isn't going to see combat, a statblock isn't necessary. Even if he is going to see combat, it might just be simpler to assume that he can hold his own so he isn't stealing the spotlight from the Kill-Team.

I'd assumed that it did want a stat block, although it certainly wouldn't be used in my scenario. It does specifically say 'backstory' of 1000-2,000 words, but then later on it says 'a profile for a Deathwatch Watch Captain'. I guess profile doesn't have to mean stats, but I generally assume that in a roleplaying context it does. I find it difficult to believe you'd be penalised for not including one if it isn't necessary for your game, but if I have the words spare I'll probably be putting one in - just to play it safe - unless there is clarification that says otherwise.

well i also look at the fact that the winners joins the deathwatch and they have some profiles for them.

In hopes of getting an official response, I've put together a list of questions others and I have had regarding the contest.

- The official contest page requires the Watch-Captain to have a 'profile'. Does this mean a full stat block, constituting Characteristics, Skills, Talents, Traits, and Gear, or is it simply a reference to the Watch-Captain's 'back story'?

- If the profile is considered to be a stat block, does that profile count against the 1,000-2,000 word count for the Watch-Captain's back story?

- Does the Watch-Captain's 1,000-2,000 word back story count against the 10,000 word limit imposed by the contest page, or are they considered separate entries?

- Must the Watch-Captain be from one of the 'official' chapters done so far by FFG (Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Storm Wardens, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists) or may they be of custom Chapters? May they be from First Founding Chapters that appear in First Founding (Iron Hands, Salamanders, White Scars, Raven Guard)?

- Does the official submission require full enemy stat blocks, or can enemies be referenced from other sources (such as Deathwatch, Mark of the Xenos, and The Emperor Protects)?

- If enemy stat blocks are included in the adventure, are they counted against the 10,000 word limit?

- Does the disclaimer that must be included with the entry count against the 10,000 word limit?

- Assuming these questions are answered by an FFG official, if an entrant has already submitted his work but finds his entry to be in conflict with one of the questions answered here, may he resubmit? For example, if I submit my entry lacking a full stat block for the Watch-Captain, am I allowed to resubmit my entry with the stat block included?

Received an official reply about the contest submissions, answers in bold:

Q: The official contest page requires the Watch-Captain to have a 'profile'. Does this mean a full stat block, constituting Characteristics, Skills, Talents, Traits, and Gear, or is it simply a reference to the Watch-Captain's 'back story'?

A: For the Watch-Captain, it would be preferable if he had both a stat block and a small section of writing on his back story and personality.

Q: If the profile is considered to be a stat block, does that profile count against the 1,000-2,000 word count for the Watch-Captain's back story?

A: Yes, the stat block for the Watch-Captain counts into his 1,000–2,000 words.

Q: Does the Watch-Captain's 1,000-2,000 word back story count against the 10,000 word limit imposed by the contest page, or are they considered separate entries?

A: The 1,000–2,000 words for the Watch-Captain are part of the 10,000 word count for the entire entry. It is recommended that he have an important connection to the story, allowing his word count to serve a double purpose.

Q: Must the Watch-Captain be from one of the 'official' chapters done so far by FFG (Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Storm Wardens, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists) or may they be of custom Chapters? May they be from First Founding Chapters that appear in First Founding (Iron Hands, Salamanders, White Scars, Raven Guard)?

A: The Watch-Captain may be from any chapter you desire.

Q: Does the official submission require full enemy stat blocks, or can enemies be referenced from other sources (such as Deathwatch, Mark of the Xenos, and The Emperor Protects)?

A: Your submission should include all stat blocks for adversaries new or unique to the adventure. Any adversary with a stat block already created in Deathwatch may simply be referenced.

Q: If enemy stat blocks are included in the adventure, are they counted against the 10,000 word limit?

A: Enemy stat blocks count towards the 10,000 word limit.

Q: Does the disclaimer that must be included with the entry count against the 10,000 word limit?

A: The legal disclaimer does not count towards the 10,000 word limit.

Q: If an entrant has already submitted his work but finds his entry to be in conflict with one of the questions answered here, may he resubmit? For example, if I submit my entry lacking a full stat block for the Watch-Captain, am I allowed to resubmit my entry with the stat block included?

A: As long as all submissions are in before the deadline, you may revise your submission. However, each person is only aloud one submission, and your final submission will be the one reviewed.

I hope that all helps, and good luck!
