Titg deck - no discard

By Spelgroep Phoenix, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

Th deck I used at Leige (European Championship):

Deck:

Miskantoic

2 Dr Carson
3 Dr carson treatment
2 Strange Librarian
3 Museum Curator
3 Obscure Linguist
2 Shortsighted Librarian

Hastur

2 Hastur (remove willpower and terror action)
3 Come with us
3 Dangerous inmate
1 Victoria Glasser
3 Things from Nightmare (restricted)
2 Victoria's Loft
1 Atlach-Nacha

Yog

3 Things in the ground
3 Faceless abductor
3 Guardian of the key
3 Stalking hounds
1 Cthuga
2 Blood Magician
1 Glaaki
1 The Sleepwalker

Neutral

3 Arkham asylum

Total 50

Deck idea:
get out Titg quickly by drawing it, using museum curator (icw faceless abductor) or using mulligan. During the tournament I never had any problems getting it out very fast. When playing Titg I use it in my turn so I can play Stalking hound for free and Things from Nightmare really cheap. When also having Dr carson treatment in start hand I even have the possibilty to get an Ancient One up and running in the first turn. I get it in play insane by Titg and restore and ready it with Dr carsons treatment.

I dont use many support and events as I rather bring characters into play when using Titg. I ready those with Dr carson and Arkham Asylum. Insane characters from my opponent can be used by playing Come with us for surprise defense during his turn or just to speed things up in my own turn.

Strange Librarian is there for both my own deck and opponents deck. I use it on my own deck in refresh phase to decide if I use Titg immediatly or to draw next two cards. I use it in my opponent to get rid of some bad cards before he draws them and to know which other cards he does draw.

Guardian of the key is there to protect my most important supports, Tith and Ark As.
Dangerous inmate is just great to use on my opponents characters. I can restore him and use him again. Gets even better with a Hastur or a Blood Magician in play.
Obscure Linguist and Sleepwalker are just in there because they are both great characters.
Shortsighted Librarian is for more deck control.
Blood magician can also be helpfull to get an extra token by adding a investigation icon.
The Ancient one's are there to really make things worse for the opponent real quick. Glaaki, Cthuga and Atlach-Nacha all have real great abilities. Although I never got to play Atlach-Nacha during the whole tournament.

Possible chances:
I think Victoria's Loft could be left out. I do create a nice lockdown but without the Loft the opponent still needs two turns to get 1 character ready which is just bad enough as it is. Could replace them for 2 demon lovers. This gives me more characters which is always good for Titg. They are nice on their own and still cheap to get out when I draw them (in stead of getting them into play with Titg). They also help the Faceless abductor but unfortunately not the Dangerous Inmate (printed skill). Also thinking about removing Shortsighted Librarian. Other options as replacement are:

- Master of Amulets. I can discard Stalking Hounds and drawn Ancient One's to take control of insane characters
- Old man of the Woods
- Mad Genius
- Journey to the other side
- Stealthy Byakhee
- The Mage known as Magnus. Almost same idea as Master of AMulets but instead of take control I destroy.

Thanks for this, looks like a good deck ^^
Been wanting to build a TitG deck but haven't yet got that flash of inspiration that gets me going. This deck should hopefully give me something to brainstorm and come up with my own variation.

Looks cool, and kudos for pulling off a three faction design.

Things in the Ground is one of those cards I really need to get around to playing with. I know it's potentially powerful but I haven't messed with it yet.

Right now I'm working on a Yog/Hastur Cultist deck. Just put together the first prototype last night but haven't tried it out yet so I know it will probably need a good bit of tuning still before it works nicely.

Darkman, how useful have you been finding the Guardian of the Key to normally be?

I have had that card in my Yog Mill deck for as long as I can remember and I think I have used its ability to protect my support cards all of one time. And I think I have played that deck in excess of 50+ times with no exaggeration.

Sadly, there are not many (or any) better alternatives for the cost/icons/ability in the Yog faction as it is still pretty useful for the cost even barring its ability. Servant of Nodens is equitable for example, but lacks any ability whatsoever. But the second a better card comes around for the cost, I think I am going to dump the guardian.

Also, how tight do you consider the deck build as far as potential card inclusions? I ask because Things in the Ground/Curse of the Stone is a strong combo and a potential secondary win condition if your opponent has enough characters in play. Plus it is deck control thwarting their potential efficacy.

Usefulness of Guardian? Can't really tell actually because I haven't played the game that much. The last time I played this deck was during the regionals in Amsterdam and then I only had 2 in my deck.

I can tell you how useful it was during the tournament in Liege. I encountered almost no shub decks so there was actually no real fear for support destruction. If I also did not have cthulhu against me I just didnt play the Guardian because there was no real threat against my support cards.

In one game against a deck with cthulhu in it, I got a guardian in play real quick by using things. However it was still exhausted when my opponent played a deep one assualt. So no use there. During the whole tournament I believe I used it once. That doesnt seem much but when its on the table it also prevents your opponent from playing support destruction because he will waste a domain. So without my guardian on the table maybe my Things would have visited the discard pile much more often. Who knows?

Because of using three factions I more or less wanted to have about the same amount of cards from each faction to prevent resource problems. So when replacing some cards I really try to replace the "bad" cards with cards from the same faction. So that would mean I have to leave out some Yog cards when putting in 3 Curse of the Stone (CotS). I can ditch some Guardians or Blood Magicians probably. But as the title says, its no discard deck and with adding CotS it almost becomes a real discard deck. Also there is a great chance I have to discard those CotS when using Things. To overcome that problem I have to put in some recycling cards like gathering of the stones or cards like Journey to the other side. To make CotS real useful I have to put in Yog or the large man and before you know it this becomes a 100% discard deck. I choose to go another route with Things and I do like the way it plays. Almost all decks that use Things are discard decks. I just wanted to go a different way.

If so, I've found the Guardian of the Key to be quite effective for this deck in my test games.

Also my belated thanks for posting the deck, Hellfire! It was just in time before the tournament in Liège and caused me to make quite a few changes to my deck, since initially I had a lot of trouble defeating it! aplauso.gif

In my first two games against it I ran out of cards just before I would have won my third story: In the first game I was two cards short, in the second one card short. It made me realize that to win against Mill decks I needed to have ways to win stories very fast and that I needed more support destruction.

So your deck was the reason I added Chess Prodigy, Open For Inspection, and Political Demonstration to my deck! After making these changes, I no longer had any problems winning against your deck (or other types of milling decks, really). All of these cards have served me well in the tournament at some point, so this was a crucial change! gran_risa.gif

(For anyone interested I also posted the tournament version my deck over at CardGameDB: www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/CoC/cocdecks.html/_/coc-decks/liege-2011-r49 )

And while it wasn't sufficient to beat Darkman's deck I was at least able to put up a good fight! gui%C3%B1o.gif
