Some n00b rule clarifications

By scottchiefbaker, in CoC Rules Discussion

I just started playing today and I want to make sure I'm learning the rules correctly. Apologies if these are silly.

  1. If I a character is committed to a story, and has fast do all struggles on that story get treated as though they had fast? Or is it just the struggles the character has icons for? Does it change if I have two characters committed to a story, and only one of them has fast?
  2. If I have two characters commited to story, one has willpower and the other does not, if I lose a terror struggle can I chose the character with willpower to go insane (and thus not go insane)? Or do I have to pick a character that could go insane?
  3. Can I commit a character to a story the turn it enters play?
  4. Do I get three success tokens if I commit a character with an Investigation icon to a story, and my opponent does not commit any?
  5. Cards like Syndicate Liaison and T-Men that say choose and do XYZ to a character allow me to choose any character, even my opponents?
  6. For the purposes of Yog-Sothoth what is a spell card? An event?

Thanks!

Fast Fast Fast

2. You cannot choose a character to go insane that cannot become insane (i.e. a character with Willpower and/or Terror icons). Likewise you cannot choose to wound a character with Invulnerability . So, if one or more of your committed characters can go insane (or be wounded) you have to choose one of them.

3. Yes, unless it's the first player's first turn (since then, the story phase is omitted). You can even commit characters entering play in the story phase, if you haven't started committing characters yet. A select few characters can even enter play committed to a story, e.g. the Cats of Ulthar .

4. Yes.

5. Yes. Please note that since both cards' effects are Forced Response s, if your opponent doesn't have any valid targets in play, you must choose one of your own characters, which could even be the character itself!

6. Spell is a subtype. A(n) (event) card will state if it has the subtype or not. A Single Gimpse is an examle of a Spell event card, while Gathering at the Stones is not.

A minor clarification on answer (4):

If you have an unopposed character with Investigation and Skill greater than zero , then you would get 3 tokens. A character with zero Skill cannot win skill, nor is it considered unopposed.
