A Few Questions...

By MattStark, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey there, I have only just recently decided to start playing this game, and have never played any card games before so it's taking me a while to learn, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Following my first game a couple of questions arose that I could not find the answers to, so I have decided to ask for some help...

1) If a character with an attachment is killed, does the attachment then get sent to the discard pile? Or is it possible for it to remain in play and be passed to another character?

2) I understand that Limited cards such as Great Keep can only be played once per round, but once the round has been completed and we start a new round, is it possible to play another limited card and eventually have more than one Great Keep card in play, thus stacking the effects and earning +2 Gold?

Sorry if the answer to these questions are obvious, I just could not find them in the Core Set rulebook and that's all I have to go on. If anybody could help me out or point me in the right direction to find some answers I would be really appreciative!

Some general concepts associated to these questions:

1. Attachments must be attached to something in order to stay in play. If at any time, they are not attached to something (or cannot be legally attached to whatever they are attached to), they are discarded. So if a character is "killed out from under" and attachment, it would be considered "unattached" and discarded before another character could "pick it up."

2. The "Limited" keyword places a limit on when something can be played, not what can actually be played. So when you are playing "Limited" cards, you just look to see if another one had already been played by that player that round. You do not look at the title of the card, or compare it to the titles of other cards already in play.

Another important thing to keep in mind about the "Limited" keyword is that it only limits when you can play the card. If you have an effect that says "put a location into play from your hand," you could use that to put a "Limited" location into play even if you had already played a "Limited" location that round. Even if it is a second copy of that same card. This is because using a card effect to put another card into play is not the same as "playing" that card (by paying gold for it when it is your turn to Marshal), so the "Limited" keyword will not apply.

Thanks for the help guys! I was just wondering because it seems as though if you can keep playing Limited cards such as Great Keep, then the amount of Gold you have to use during the Marshalling phase seems to keep increasing. So if were to have say 3 Great Keep cards in play, then that's 3 Gold to spend right there, seems a simple way to increase your expenditure. One more question that has arisen, when the Plot card Valar Morghulis is revealed stating to kill all "characters" in play, am I right to think that locations (such as Great Keep again) are not affected?

Characters are characters. Locations are locations.

Yes, 3 copies of Great Keep in play means you count 3 extra gold in the Marshalling Phase. Several cards in the game cost 8+ Gold to bring into play (mainly from the expansions - such as King Robbs Host or Balaerion the Black) and very few plots will give you enough Gold to play for this by themselves, so ideally you will have more than one location that generate Gold (or reduce costs) in play.

Valar Morgulis affects only Characters, so Locations such as Great Keep will not be killed/discarded.
