Best expansions to buy

By sparhawk1975, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi People,

Probably a questions already made, but the list is to long to find it :)

I want to buy a expansions, which is best to buy?

Thanks for your replies.

Erwin

As a general rule, the big box expansions are better than the small ones. The one exception is the Misaktonic Horror expansion which is an expansion expansion. I wouldn't suggest you purchase this until you have at least three other expansions, otherwise you will not get much benefit from it.

Of the big box expansions, the general consensus that the best one is Dunwich, then Innsmouth, then Kingsport. Kingsport does not add any extra unstable locations to the game, whereas Dunwich and Innsmouth do. Innsmouth is vicious though, so you want to start with Dunwich first, if you can find it. All big box expansion add new AOs, Investigators and monsters. Dunwich and Kingsport add extra Common Items, Unique Items and Spells too.

The small box expansions are worthwhile but contain a lot less for your bucks. Dark Pharaoh introduces Exhibit Items and is strong in theme. King in Yellow introduces Act cards (a new way to lose the game), but it's questionable how much of a threat these are. Cult of one thousand introduces the cult but it's difficult to join and seldom worth it, which damages the theme immensely. However it does contain nine new monsters, so it's worth it just for that. Luker at the Threshold has extra gate tokens, though once again the theme suffers somewhat.

There's a wealth of custom material out there too: 16 Investigators, Vermont Horror and Lovecraft Country Horror - all of which can be found in the files section on Board Game Geek - are well worth taking a look at. You also might find some interesting material int he Fan Creations in this forum.

This question REALLY should be stickied! I think every new forum member asks this question!

I know, tell me about it :'

But, yeah, what Jake said :'D

Although I'd add that you *would* find interesting materials in the fan creation section of this forum (personally, my favorite sections are Ancient Ones and Heralds, but other people have different preferences).

Does it matter which 3 you have or is there a preferred list?

Also what about the Black Goat of the Woods expansion? Is this a good expansion?

I wish I knew what I was doing before bought the game. I'd bought main game+3 big boxes instead of main game+1 big box+4 little boxes.

Black Goat carries some neat monsters + useful items and spells. Contains extremely hardcore herald(if you don't want to be smashed into the ground ASAP, you'll need to get experienced in the game before using this herald), and very underused cult and corruption mechanic(may be fixed by many custom fan created variants).

Yeah, you should probably go with a big box. Dunwich is the best choice, it adds Injuries and Madnesses (which are vital for a good gaming), lots of new cool stuff and boosts the difficulty of the core game. Innsmouth is terrific, but it comes with no bonus items for equipping your investigators, and thus it's not a good first expansion. Besides, it's the most difficult board of all, so everything coming after Innsmouth will be kinda easier, and maybe you want to go slowly into the madness. Kingsport is great, but it works perfectly as second board expansion. So I'd say Dunwich, Kingsport, Innsmouth.

For the small boxes, King in Yellow is devine. I'm playing a lot with it in the last days, and I'm re-discovering how great the theme is. You should probably appreciate it better if undiluted with other Mythos, so probably Dunwich - King in Yellow - Kingsport - innsmouth is the best pattern.

Good luck,a nd happy gaming!
