Shadow Parasite

By Marshal Lambert, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Couple of questions on Shadow Parasite. This character card reads:

"Response: After a character's STR is reduced by X, Shadow Parasite gets +X STR until the end of the phase."

Q1 : If an effect reduces several cards strengths simutaneously can I use Shadow Parasites response for each one? I know the one trigger one reaction rule but is the trigger the card causing the strength reduction (such as Fear of Winter) or is the trigger the fact that a character is losing strength?

Q2: Fear of Winter goes off. Characters all lose one strength. At what point does Shadow Parasite get discarded (by strength being reduced to zero)? Can he react before being discarded (assuming this will somehow lead to his strength remaining above 0 - till then end of the phase at least)?

Thanks

The passive "discard at 0" will kick in before the Parasite can use its Response to gain STR. Technically, it can still trigger its Response and gain STR, but it will already be on its way out, so that extra STR will not "undo" the discard.

Yes I meant Threat from the North.....

Thanks for clearing that up and answering the questions.

When exactly is the trigger for Shadow Parasite's response when the STR reduction comes from a conditional constant effect like Dragonpit?

  • When a character controlled by another playert enters play while the condition is true?
  • When the condition becomes true while a character controlled by another player is in play?

If the 'Pit is in play and you have more cards in shadows, if you opponent plays one of the Reinforcement events (other than retreat & regroup), you'll be able to trigger the Parasite when the character enters play.

I believe both of these situations are correct. If you're opponent has two characters in play and you each have 1 card in shadows, and you subsequently place an additional there after triggering the Shadow Seer, you could trigger the Parasite twice.

*I'm using challenge phase situations since I think that's where the bump proves to be most useful.

Thanks for the confirmation.

reduce means get -x str?

when a char get +x str in a challenge and reduce x ,can parasite get +x str?

If you are asking whether the parasite can trigger its ability and get +x str when a "gets +x str" effect on another character wears off so that the character's str is lower in str check #2 than it was in str check #1, the answer is no. That's the whole point of defining "reduce str" as the addition of a "-x str" modifier.

Because a character's str is always calculated from scratch by starting with its base STR and adding in all applicable modifiers, you cannot determine "increased" or "decreased" STR by comparing the results of a current STR calculation to the results of a past STR calculation You can only look at what is happening now, defining "increase" and "decrease" by the applicable modifiers, not by the final result.
