Where does Blood Bowl fit in?

By Jdidgital, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

OK. I play Warhammer FRP and have for a few years. But, I'm not really a grognard about all the history of the Warhammer universe.

I've played various incarnations of Blood Bowl and I am currently enjoying the new FF Blood Bowl Manager game.

I've been thinking about having a plot in my WFRP game centered around an up-coming Blood Bowl tournament. My question is, does Blood Bowl appear in any of the actual WFRP literature? I understand that they are "supposed" to be the same world but part of me says that Blood Bowl is actually just a parody of the WFRP world. And that's because there, of course, would be a lot of logistical problems - like, are Chaos Champions allowed to travel through the Empire to participate in the games? Are Orks and Skaven participants allowed to wander around? Where exactly are games played?

It seems that there are a lot of problems with Blood Bowl existing in the same, regular WFRP world. So, does anyone know, does Blood Bowl actually show up in any of the WFRP novels or stories?

I don't believe so. There is however snotball which is essentially ye olde footballe with a tied-up snotling used as a ball. This game was mentioned in one or two of the v1 books (Power Behind the Throne and Middenheim City, iirc). There's also the Bernabau stadium in Middenheim which is used for Snotball. So, if you do want a sports-related adventure that is a bit more grounded in the plausible, you could go for snotball instead.

From what i understand you've got it right. Its a parody universe on warhammer where the games take place. There is no reason it would really work in the actual warhammer world. I had to come to this rude conclusion earlier in the year =(. But alas, a WFRP3 game in the setting would be super fun. Perhaps you can tweak it so it only incorporates tolerated races?

The Bloodbowl PC,XBOX 360 game has a lot of great imagery and locations for games. Great stadiums, players, team pits, dungeons, etc. Pretty faithful to the rules as well (as long as you dont play the real time version).

Gitzman

Yes, Blood Bowl is a parody of the regular Warhammer universe...

But I've been thinking for a while about an underground Blood Bowl tournament. A small community, far from the great cities, where Blood Bowl games are held in secret. Like a cult, but instead of a chaos-dedicated cult, devotees of Blood Bowl!!! I think it could be a hell of an adventure...

Oooh! I like this. I will certainly ponder this.

My players' characters have just arrived, after an arduous journey, in Altdorf. I originally thought it would be fun if the Blood Bowl was being held there this year but now I'm going to retool my story a bit. I secret, underground cult of Blood bowlers would be pretty cool.

If I'm not mistaken, Blood Bowl started a long time ago in the 'Warhammer City', Middenheim supplement in the form of 'Snot Ball'. I still use this form of it in my campaigns. Whenever my players are in Middenheim for some reason, there's always something about Snot Ball. It's either pre-, during, or post season, or people are talking about the coming season.

I even ran a game centered around it once. The Middenheim Maulers had advanced to the finals and the 'Snot Bowl' was being held in Middenheim against the Kislev Krushers. It was a grand event. During the halftime show they actually flooded the field and had a miniature naval battle exhibition, a very expensive undertaking. This is where plot began. Several cultists had conspired with a group of Skaven to detonate a warpstone bomb under the stadium. The trigger for the bomb was the mechanism that pumped the water into the stadium. The players had to uncover the plot, discover the details, and defuse the bomb before disaster struck.

The whole scenario lasted about 12 sessions and was a great success. Much fun (and many wounds) were had by all.

Check this out. I even have a 'Snot Ball' happy.gif

Snot Ball

In the game, they take Snotlings and bind them in a net and play Snot Ball with them, hence the name. This came from an old Dwarf Catapult model. We use in Middenheim games and have used it in a few Blood Bowl games.

What if Reiklanders captured prisoners of war from larger scaled battles and pitched them in entertainment for the masses in the form of Bloodbowl?

IMC, all diplomats support Blood Bowl teams even if they couldn't actually give a **** about the game. Because Blood Bowl is the one time certain rival factions/species behave peacefully under the Truce of Nuffle. Also there are the notorious Orc Coaches - the supporters protected under the Truce of Nuffle unless they break away from the coach. (Other races than Orcs qualify). Note that the Chaos All Stars are not obviously chaotic and there are no e.g. Nurgle teams as the average Imperial citizen thinks that Chaos is a myth.

Yeah, BB is basically set in an 'alternate' Warhammer. Essentially an entirely different setting.

Blood Bowl's not canon but if your players are happy for it to be included I think you could have 'friendly' teams (Human, Dwarf, High Elf, Pro Elf) competing in stadiums without harming the feel of the universe all that much.

I'm pretty sure bloodbowl isn't an alternate world but simply later in the timeline.

Two of my plot lines involved bloodbowl as a main feature. Although it was treated as new and the rules weren't very well established so it was even more brutal.

One of the bloodbowl teams had a pretty funny backstory behind it. Callifa's Castaways was a team entirely composed of the mutants that an oddly moral witchhunter didn't have the heart to kill. When she was expelled from the order she started coaching full time. The assassination attempts only stopped once the castaways won a tournament against chaos. (The castaways are technically an imperial team, even though only mutants are on the team)
