How to treat AI units

By Inquisitor Augustus Pike, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hey there again everyone. With so many races that i want to throw at my DH groups (in force atleast) being somewhat to powerful (Dark Eldar, Eldar, etc.) to throw at them. I have actualy come up with a race for them to encounter in the 40k universe. With so many races (including ones in the backdrop) and fluff (which ive loved for many years now) I decided to add to the mix. The Savrix are a very militaristic society, and are out to conquer as much as they can for thier empire. If anyone wants more back story I will post more, essentialy they are intelligent and lethal, and not so powerful that 3 of them can wreck a group of 6 pcs. They also employ A.I. units for different purposes. My question is how should i treat these units. Should i give them a set amount of commands (thatd be tailored to each one), and have those in control use Tech Use skill in order to switch commands, id like to hear all of your opinions. Ill be listing the A.I units and their basic roles, and a general description, so it makes it easier. They are referred to as tyrants.

Warden Class Tyrant-Hulking in size, 2 are assigned to every Savrix Overlord (military leader), Anti Personnel weaponry bulky slow

Assailant Class Tyrant-Standard Size, as with its name used to scout ahead of squads (larger forces) etc., Close Quarters weapons only, sleek fast

Guardian Class Tyrant-Enormorus in size, with its name again is used to choke points, and other various objecties, slow bulky Anti Personnel/anti light vehicle weaponry

Destroyer Class Tyrant-Enormous in size, once again with its name used to siege enemy lines, and take out vehicles, slender Anti Vehicle, one light anti personnel weapon

Thanks to anyone who reads, post questions if you have any, Cheers

I would say they need specific orders. They shouldn't be as flexible as a character. I would have it in categories. So for example for your first ones that are protecting the overseer:

Target: Any enemy units

Target Priority: Threat to Overseer

Tactic: Position between overseer and threat then engage

Range: Engage at long range

Then make it a tech use test to change any one of the order categories. You could perhaps then give some of the xenos the ability to change orders with more flexibility to make them more dangerous.

Heh whoops, I obviously mean 'overlord' not overseer.

Thanks Kane ill take that into my stats for them. Any other ideas are very appreciated. Cheers

Maybe account for how possible it would be for a Tech Priest to decode their machinery mobojobo and hack the A.I. himself. I'd go in assuming that at least one of your players are going to ask if they can try taking one of the things over. Especially anyone with access to Xenos Lore and Tech Use. Why fight that hulking machine protecting the overlord when you can turn it around and have it blast the overlord to smithereens!

Thanks goodwin, knowing how crazy my groups ideas are im pretty sure theyd do something like that. Also to get opinions on stats for this race, and its background, should i post it here or in the house rules forum. Thanks cheers

I'm not swell enough with the rules and what not to be compfortable throwing out stats, or even really know where to start. For the tech-use thing just have a rough idea of how difficult they should be, assuming the much stronger ones should probably be fairly difficult to take over considering xenotech plus their own security measures.

Goodluck!
