Spells (and other actions) and Line of Sight (LOS)

By Shieldstromme, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi,

A 'debate' arose last night in the groups encounter with Lazarus Mourn in the Gathering Storm.

After his monologue the players were careful to step to the side of the doorway, breaking line of sight to Lazarus.

Reading through his abilities I went for the Mortification & Curse of Undeath action cards - the targets were in medium range. It's a curse I thought - don't really see how LOS is relevant (necromancers don't often see the target of much of their targets - they tend to be 6 foot under).

A couple of the players seemed to think LOS was very relevant arguing that ranged attacks don't specifically say 'requires LOS' just a range - ditto other spell effects like Flame Blast.

Am I missing something in the rules RE LOS?

Are the players (coming from a DnD / GURPS) background having difficulty with the 'looseness' of the WFRP rules? This could be an issue as one of the players in particular likes to have 'consistency' in the rules, how would you handle this?

Was I wrong?

Do I need to beg forgiveness for my GMing skills or tell the players to stop bitching and get on with it?

;)

i dont know the rule but i would tell the players to stop bitching, if you think its far and relavint to the story i say do as you want

Just like angrydragon said.

It annoys me when players (both when I am GM and player) are bitching about the environment details, and must know every **** detail. It only slows down the session and brings unnecessary confusion.

During the game always tell them to stop bitching and get on with it; afterwards discuss it as a group to make sure everyone is clear with how you want to intepret these kinds of rules so at least there is some consistency.

The last thing you want of for your players to start arguing they can shoot around corners with their ranged weapons because you did it with a curse.

So put in some basic ground rules so people are clear. Here is what I would do, but feel free to come up with your own

1. it's as curse, so doesn't need line of sight; period.

2. Normal ranged weapons normally need at least a vague line of sight, unless an action card allows otherwise

3. The above ruling is very vague though, it doesn't involve measuring and grids but instead common sense, unless there is no way to see any of the target then normally you can try and hit them, although the roll is likely to have many purple and or black dice added to the base difficulty to account for the limited LOS.
