Questions regarding the Invention rules (Black Fire Pass)

By Glorian Underhill, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hello,

I have read the engineering rules for the dwarf engineer several times, but still have some questions.

1. The Inventions are Talents. So I need to spend one Talent advance to get the invention as a card and then later build it? Can I take an invention at character creation?

2. Dwarf engineering is an advanced skill, so when taking it at character creation I simply have the skill, but not with a level of training, i.e. not a yellow dice. For each rank of training I can build one upgrade into one of my inventions. But how is that possible? Can I train an advanced skill a second time at rank one to give it a first grade? I thought according to the rules that per rank a skill can only be trained once and then the creation skill training counts also into it.

If this is so I need to wait for rank 2 to, train it one degree? I think that the engineer rules meant to act differently than this, maybe someone can enlighten me.

3. In the rules it is stated that the master engineer can socket multiple inventions in his career card. How is that meant? I think the master engineer has two talent sockets, 2 times focus I think. So can he put one invention in each talent slot, or can he put multiple (more than 2) inventions in one of his talent slots?

4. Building an Upgrade into one of the inventions cost money. For example 10s for a fortune die. What is if the test to build it fails? At normal tradecrafting rules the PC can re roll the test if it is faulted with a chaos star and recycles the materials used at crafting to build the item. So what happens to the costs of the invention upgrade, are they refunded, or do they only need to be paid if the test is succesfull?

You could build it after creation (i.e. during your first session of game play)

You begin with it "acquired" like those basic skills. You can gain one yellow die during rank 1 (or at creation).

He should be able to put more than one invention card in the same socket (i.e. 2 or more cards in one socket)

They are only spent at the point of success (otherwise they keep getting recycled). You'll have to find a reasonable time-period between creations however otherwise it would just be instantaneous (and pointless) retrys.

Ah ok, thanks for your answers.

The number of items a master engineer is capable of socketing is actually on his career talent card. Better watch next time. :)
