Just getting into the game- What should I get?

By Archeantus7, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

While my group of friends is hesitant to drop $100+ on yet another RPG we really want to play WHFRP as we've been eye-balling it for some time now. We're burnt out on D&D (any edition) and we like what WHFRP has to offer.

My question is 2-fold: Outside of the core box set, are there any rules/options presented in the other expansions that you wouldn't want to play without? If so, what 2 expansions would you get after the core set?

Has there been a convention or something as new players tend to pop out each day? I think it's great by the way.

Here's a little flow chart (a bit dated but still):

Awesome! Exactly what I need.

I'd still like to hear a few other opinions as well.

@ doc_cthulhu - Your chart refers to playing without the bits by buying just the books. I thought I needed all of the different cards to play and I assume those are only in the box sets. Can we play with just the dice and books and no cards?

I think you are best off with the following to start.

Core Set

Creature Vault
Player's Guide (Best reference and better instructions on how to play)

(after those two expand into Signs of Faith and Winds of Magic)

OH, and if you can find it, get universal heads player aids (free but he doesn't have them up anymore so you have to search around.)

You can play without funky bits by using the Tomes. They do not however include all of the things released as cards.

Also - The cards are not necessary to have around all the time. You could use fan made characters sheets (check my blog) and just record the effects of talents on them. Actions are little trickier as they would require a lot of writing so I'd recommend you to buy card pocket sheets that can have 9 cards on them.
