Duplicates, Wildfire Assault and Dominance Timing Structure-Core Set Questions

By CoalRabbits, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello hello,

Some friends and I wrapped up our 4th GoT's game last night using the Core with a few additions last night and some questions came up for us. I searched the forums and FAQ's but am having trouble finding the answer's there. If any one has the time to answer a few rules questions that would be awesome!

1.Duplicates- If you have multiple versions of a unique character in your deck, do you have to stick with the text of the first card played? Can you choose which card is saved or also do you have to stick with the original in that case and discard the dup?

2. Wildfire Assault-This is a noob question, but you could NOT use a duplicate (by not choosing a character with a dup to live and then discarding the dup instead of killing them) in this case or any other that has a 'cannot be saved text' correct?

3. Dominance Timing Structure-We had an exciting end that happened during the Dominance phase and I wanted to check if we played it out correctly. Player 3 had Knight of Flowers with the text "At the beginning of the dominance phase, Knight of Flower claims 1 Power if he is standing" as well as The Iron Throne "If you are the only player to control the Iron Throne, you automatically win dominance. Player 1 wanted to play Westeros Bleeds "Dominance: Kneel 4 Influence to discard all characters from play. We played that the Knight of Flower's claimed power first, then the dominance was given for The Iron Throne which won the game for Player 3 in this case. Is this the correct order that Westeros Bleeds would be a Player Action that happens after Reward Dominance?

4. Attachments-This is a basic question but are attachments generally returned to the original owner's discard pile when a character dies?

Thanks so much for any answer's. We are starting to understand the game more and having a great time playing it!

1. Yes, the first card played is the one that sticks around. It's not considered a duplicate, so if you discard a duplicate to save it, it's gotta stick around. There's no simple way to switch the text of a character/location to a different version.

2. You could not use a duplicate or any form of save, correct.

3. You played it correctly. By the time Westeros Bleeds could be played, player 3 has won the game.

4.They're always returned to the owner's discard pile, absent any card effects that say otherwise.

You say "generally returned to the original owner's discard pile." That "original owner" brings up a possible misunderstanding that a lot of new players make.

If Player A plays an attachment on a character controlled by Player B, Player A still owns and controls that attachment. All cards are owned, controlled, knelt, stood, etc., separately. So the attachment does not automatically go to the control of the player who controls the character it is put on. It stays with the person who played it until something specifically says otherwise. This is really important for attachments that have their own triggered ability - like Poisoned Wine. Only the controller of a card can trigger the ability of that card, so moving Poison Wine is up to the person who played the attachment, not the person who played the character it is attached to.

Thank you both for your replies! I think we are on the right track in general with getting the rules down and this really helps clarify some things.

Thanks for the extra clarification about who can use an attachment's action once it's attached. You were correct that we were playing that the action is taken by the player who controlled the character it was attached to, not the original owner of the card. I think we even had a time where your example 'Poisoned Wine' was misplayed

Thanks much! I Hope to play in the next few weeks with the better understanding of these rules.
