Multiple Direct Assault

By Flintacs, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

If I use 2 Direct Assaults during 1 challenge and win then would I get 2 locations instead of the claim or only 1?

The problem is that it's a replacement effect, so I believe you would only be able to take one location.

Playing the second copy of Direct Assault needs you to have the "normal claim effect" available in order to take control of a location. Once it has been replaced by the first copy of Direct Assault, there is no longer a "normal claim effect" to replace with the second copy.

That is my thinking.

If you played 2 effects, there would be 2 pending replacement effects. Each one needs to resolve, but they conflict. So the First Player chooses the order in which they resolve. The first one replaces the "normal" claim. Now, remember that the card says "instead of the normal claim effects," not "instead of the normal claim effects for that type of challenge ." The replaced claim is now the "normal" claim effect for that particular challenge. So when the second claim replacement effect is applied, it replaces the replaced claim.

The effect for each Direct Assault claim replacement is "choose 1 location." The effects do not stack, and you effectively get the claim replacement of the last effect applied. For 2 Direct Assaults, that's pretty much an academic distinction, but imagine giving a power icon to Pyat Pree, then playing Direct Assault on him. Do you kill a character or steal a location? (And, of course, we just said the First Player effectively chooses by having the one he doesn't want apply first.)

Clear! Thank you, ktom!
