I'm pleased to announce our third finalist for the 2008 Warhammer Fantasy Scenario Contest. We received a lot of entries, and the three finalists should be extremely proud to rise to the top of the number of excellent entries received. I’d like to thank everyone who did participate in the contest - I enjoyed reading the wide variety of scenarios and ideas, especially to see how creative and thematic the entries could be given the tight deadline and submission guidelines.
Today I present you with our third and final, well.. finalist. Congratulations once again to all three well-deserving entries.
Scenario Contest Finalist #3:
Burn After Printing
By Alexander J Bateman
Alexander’s Burn After Printing is tagged as “A Tale of Printed Pamphlets in the Empire’s Premier City.” The power of the written word is always an interesting topic for a setting where illiteracy is so common.
Without spoiling any surprises, here’s how Burn After Printing gets started:
The scenario starts with the Characters being accosted by a messenger summoning them to meet with Michaela von Jänke at the Hangman’s Tavern, located on Altdorf’s famous Three Tolls Bridge. This should ideally happen when they are located in a tavern, shop or other location that a messenger could have easily tracked them down too. The message is not written down, and if questioned the messenger will only say that he is employed as a footman at the Hangman’s Tavern, and that Michaela von Jänke is one of the taverns regular clients.
Alexander did a great job providing a variety of options at different stages of the adventure. Each option is fleshed out with important details on handling the specific approach, resulting in an adventure that feels more open-ended and dynamic than the word count restrictions would seem to enforce. The scenario concludes by evaluating the consequences for the character’s actions, and presents several possible outcomes.
A number of handy sidebars and handouts help the GM breath life into the adventure and make sure the characters remain engaged. The very first sidebar, titled “Why Me,” helps provide some useful tips to get the characters involved in the storyline.
The judges especially liked the information provided in the Appendices for Burn After Printing . The appendices do a wonderful job of expanding on the locations found in the adventure, and offer a lot of flavourful local colour via the non-player characters listed and their conversations. The information in the appendices is sure to find a place in your game even after finishing Burn After Printing .
Congratulations, Alexander – as one of the finalists, you may be selected as the ultimate winner of the 2008 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Scenario Contest!
