Explosive / Blast damage

By Camojoe, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hi,

My players recently started to use things like grenades and a newly acquired grenade launcher to much greater extent.

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that a blast would hit all locations, but that also seems a bit excessive, just of the bat.

How do you handle explosions? It does not make sense to have an explosion affect only one hit location - I have been searching through my rulebook looking for rules on this.

This question is purely for where to deal critical damage, correct?

No matter what, a blast weapon should only deal the amount of damage listed in its damage code one time per attack (per subject hit of course).

At this point, I consider the discussion relatively trivial, as most mook level NPCs should just die horribly if a blast weapon brings them to crit damage levels. If it matters for a large foe, I would have the primary effect applied simply to the reverse of the die on the initial hit. Failing that, the body is generally a large target.

I thought I read somewhere that blast damage is always applied to the body. Could not find it at the moment though. Still, that it is how we play it.

I'm fairly certain it is always treated as a body hit. If you really want to roll location you can, but I don't see the point in making the rolls for a grenade longer than they have to be.

OK.Yes - as it is an explosive effect I understood that if you are caught in the area, more than one location would be hit when looking at Crit damage - For mooks I just have them drop when hitting zero wounds, so am not too concerned about them.

I need to find a middle ground as to date we played that all locations would get hit, which does make things like grenades more effective than what it should be...

Thinking about this more - I will have the Body hit as the default location (largest and all) but for every degree maybe have more locations affected. It is an area effect after all so that will assume a better/more accurate (or luckier) placing of the grenade when it explodes.

Explosions hit on the body. - Nothing more, nothing less.

Based on?

Part of this is for me to understand what the ruleset defines - There is nothing specifically saying that grenades should affect more than one location as an area effect but then again, there is nothing that says it should be treated like a gunshot type of hit either.

P. 128 - Under the description of the Blast Quality: Roll Hit Location and Damage individually for each person hit by the blast.

New for me as well...

THe point is, any hit should only, ever, hit one body location during an attack. Unless it somehow divides up its damage.

If a grenade is deal 6 wounds, and the target is at 3 wounds base (and lets assume TB and AP have been subtracted out),a grenade should not deal 3 crit damage to all limbs. That is exceedingly different than 3 crit damage to a single limb.

OK, great. Thank you for the replies.
