Running out of time for 3rd expansion?

By Eunomiac, in Battlestar Galactica

I remember Exodus was announced late enough to scare all of us into thinking it would never come... and we're now a day later than last year's announcement. Anyone with more experience than I with FFG release schedules and such have any insight on how much hope we should hold out for an "Earth" objective?

It does seem quiet compared to last year, doesn't it?

Still, I'd argue that part of that is because players like me are so satisfied with Exodus that we're still exploring it, while Pegasus had lost its luster pretty fast for many playgroups, and so they were on the boards early clamoring for another expansion. I was one of them, and although I haven't raised too much ruckus up to now for expansion #3, I really am eager to see it.

So if this is the unofficial Expansion #3 petition, consider this my signature. gran_risa.gif

Really, our group is not a big fan of Exodus, but we do play with it. We would love a new expansion, especially bringing some new characters to the game.

We all would love another expansion.. we've made it pretty clear in a number of threads in this forum. happy.gif
But I have to agree with glasswalker (sorry Outlaw), and say that our group is NOT particularly happy with Exodus for a number of reasons... it doesn't combine all that well with Pegasus and it introduces a number of random elements to the game that we don't care for. We keep using parts of it anyway, but a third expansion would be much appreciated.

I also eagerly await an Earth expansion. My game group has tried all aspects of the Exodus expansion and have not felt really satisfied with it. In the end, we mostly just use the extra cards and characters from Exodus and a few rule changes (like having one loyalty card left over). We use most of Pegasus but not NC. This has been pretty god but some members are finding it a little stale.

Good point about the clamor for Exodus prompting it, I hadn't considered that. And it seems like FFG was certainly contemplating another expansion when they designed Exodus—it's a little silly for a game, the entire purpose of which is to find Earth, to end at the Ionian Nebula. And for reasons I mention in the "... daybreak" thread, this final expansion would be the hardest of all to design.

All I want for Christmas is better Agendas for my Cylon Leaders. That's all. I could die happy after that (well, once I play a few games with them first).

Actually, come to think of it, maybe we could unite in some kind of community project to design better agendas. There are only two real problems with the existing ones: There's no compelling reason for the non-Cylon Leaders to figure out what the Agenda is (because it has no effect on whether the humans or the cylons win in the end), so there's very little pressure on the Cylon Leader to bluff and scheme about his Agenda.

There is an alternative set of Agendas in the "Razor Cut" fan-made supplement, though I don't believe they've been updated for Exodus and I know the creator has told me that he hasn't play-tested them enough to be confident about their balance. But the general idea is fantastic—instead of one type of Agenda card (i.e. "you are on X team, but you also need to do Y"), there are three:

  • Shared Win: You can win with either side, but you need to meet a different objective depending on which side you choose to ally yourself with. This lets you play both sides at the start, before choosing the one most likely to win.
  • Team Win: You're on either the Cylon or Human team (determined by your Agenda), but your team can't win at all unless you've satisfied your Agenda. If you don't, your whole team loses, even if they would have otherwise won. These agendas put pressure on everyone to decide whether the Leader is on their team: If the Cylon Leader has a Team Win agenda, helping him/her is necessary for their victory.
  • Exclusive Win: You win all by yourself if your "team" (determined by your Agenda) would have won, but you've satisfied the objectives on your card. With both Exclusive and Team Win Agendas in the game, it becomes crucial for everyone to suss out the Cylon Leader's motives (instead of just ignoring him/her like in most games). Do you help the Cylon Leader, or do you fight him? Or is the Cylon Leader smart enough to trick you into helping him as you fight him?

The trick is to come up with a set of objectives on each Agenda that allow for paranoia and suspicion: Razor Cut Agendas have multiple objectives per card, and each of them show up on more than one Agenda—is Cavil putting a Centurion onboard Galactica because he wants "Peaceful Coexistence" (a Cylon Team Win), or because he wants to "Empower the Centurions" (an Exclusive Win). They also need to be intuitive enough that people aren't forced to study lengthy reference cards to figure it all out, which is the one area in which I think the Razor Cut agendas fall short — they're a bit too time-consuming; the game can't be all about the Cylon Leader, after all!

... anyway, I probably should have started a new thread with this. Well, if people are interested in brainstorming, I will!

I very much like this idea of Razor Cut agendas!

On the other topic of a third expansion and the release schedule:

If I remember correctly, Pegasus had been out for quite some time before Exodus was released. Was it really just one year before? It seems longer to me.

Whatever the case may be, you guys seem to be forgetting the same criteria in every discussion on this thought. FFG is a profit oriented company, not a bunch of hobbyists tinkering around with board game design in somebody's garage. They will publish a third expansion only if:

  1. Sales numbers warrant another expansion and they predict to sell this one at least as well as Exodus.
  2. There seems to be enough of a hype surrounding BSG (as opposed to another, more lucrative project) to make the time, effort and cost of designing yet another expansion worthwhile.

I certainly hope they will publish another expansion. But unless they annouce such, I won't hold my breath.

Eunomaniac,

As for the forum platform, I sympathize with you, believe me. To have agonized for multiple hours over a post on this board is to have then seen that post butchered by absurd, disastrous and totally unpredictable format changes. (I mean that the nature is unpredictable; that it's going to happen is a certainty.)

Nonetheless, I do kind of feel like brainstorming about what expansion #3 might include. Care to start a new thread with your excised post? I'll jump in, I promise.

Just a quick reply, since I just got Arkham City and I hear you get to play as Catwoman: I am working on something now and will get it posted soon!
