Unnatural Infamy

By KommissarK, in Black Crusade

So, looking at the rules, and I noticed that there are a few good ways to get Unnatural Characteristic.

Infamy is a characteristic. Therefore, it appears to be possible to have a character acquire it.

How much of a Bad Thing is this? I mean, its basically a plus X infamy points, and a X/2 extra DoSs on a acquisiition test/any other infamy test. That seems to be fairly powerful.

More specifically, consider this with Protean Form (p. 220)

I'm not sure you could/would want to use Protean Form for Infamy checks. Doesn't using Infamy to make aquisitions take a while? Hours, days, weeks? And how often are Infamy checks done conciously? How would you know exactly when to activate it? This power requires you to roll on the phsychic phenomena chart every round. Seems a bit dangerous.

Other than that I can't answer your question whether Unnatural Infamy is legit.

I do not think getting Unnatural Infamy is intended to be possible, but even if it could be acquired, at this point in time the game offers no way (or even an example) of how to get Unnatural Infamy.

Yeah, Protean form is not a good example, Chaos Organ p. 293 allows it though (albeit at a very low value).

Or, failing that, note the boldface text on p.290. If somehow, the caster could gain gifts while still under the influence of Protean Form, he would have a theoretical +/- PR*2 + Push value (3 or 5) + IB% chance on the roll (easily something like 22%), or rather, as long as you're within 44% of the target value, you hit it. This could allow them to target Chaos Organ multiple times. At which point they could keep begging for a "Reward if the Gods, but use Infamy Points to reroll that to guarantee a failure, so a to gain a gift. Also, in this situation, the character would need to be a follower of Tzeenech, which then means that having 20 Chaos Organs implies Multiple Limbs (20), each of which can be hidden.

Note that I am a GM, not a player in this situation, I just like to figure out how the players can break these rules. Clearly, if a player did this, I would grab my Deathwatch CE from the shelf, and introduce their face to it, multiple times. Pretty sure no jury would convict me.

Obviously, this is very bad, but by strict readings of Unnatural Characterisitics, I don't see why its totally out of the question. Obviously, this should be included in the errata.

Pretty sure this isn't intended, I have no idea how you would explain it, and infamy is generated differently from other stats and does not actually concern any physical, personal attributes of the character.

I shouldn't be any more possible than using 'perfection' to get +5 Infamy.

I wouldnt allow it as a GM, doesnt feel intended and doesnt seem to apply very well with the notion of Unnatural stats.

HI!

IMHO, Infamy is as close as your BC character can get to Renown in DW, or Profit Factor in RT, with Fate Points mixed in (& not intended to upgrade like you said before).

Basically - this.

IIRC the rules state that you cannot gain unnatural infamy. I can't check because my book is being borrowed, but I'm almost positive that it was in there.
