Arkham Nights - Playable preview of Forbidden Alchemy with Tim Uren

By Sluggonics, in Mansions of Madness

I was one of the lucky four individuals who won the drawing to play Forbidden Alchemy with Tim Uren. The scenario we played was called "Rise of the Reanimator" and involved us investigators exploring an old, abandoned medical school where nefarious experiments were conducted on corpses, orchestrated by the mysterious Herbert West. Overall, the theme of this story was "ZOMBIES!", and we were harried by them throughout. I won't give away the clues and processes that took us through the story, or spoil any of the events and ultimate objective, except to say that there was lots of running away from zombies and walking hands, and frequent horror checks as we had to re-cross our path through chasing zombies on several occasions.

We each played the new investigators that will be available with Forbidden Alchemy. One person was Carolyn Fern, another was Darrell Simmons, another was Vincent Lee, and I was Dexter Drake. Dexter had a cane knife which he could use as his weapon. The advantage was that any combat checks he made that required strength checks, using the cane knife, he could instead use his dexterity. His other ability was the ability to, when in a hiding place, use his two movement points to re-appear in any room that does not currently contain any lock, barrier or exploration cards. This was an ability we used to great effect to get a needed key to a needed locked door while bypassing a horde of zombies and walking hands.

Carolyn's ability allows her to take horror herself, and for each point of horror she took, heal up to 4 horror on any investigator in the same room. An ability which was also used to great effect, considering that we had been racking up horror with the amount of checks we kept having to make.

Vincent's ability was to use his action to heal up to 2 points of damage for any one investigator in the same space (or possibly same room, I forget) as him. This was used to great effect as well, to heal any lingering damage from the frequent evade checks we made running past zombies.

Darrell Simmons had a great ability-- if he has his camera with him, he can use it once per game to take a picture of a specific monster. Once he's photographed that monster, all investigators receive a +2 bonus to any combat checks made against that type of monster. Naturally, he took a picture of a zombie, which gave us a +2 bonus against them, which came in very, very handy.

Ultimately, we were actually able to win the story, which, while I won't give away the ending, involved a down-to-the-wire chase between the investigators and the keeper. We won at almost the last possible second.

A very exciting game, and Forbidden Alchemy looks like it's going to be lots of fun. Kudos to Tim for running a great game for us!

Thanks for the info! Sounds like this expansion is a must-have!

And thanks for not spoiling any of the surprises!

I got to play on Sunday. We also took all 4 of the new Investigators. We lost, but it came right down to the end. Had a blast and i will say people are going to really enjoy the new stories.
