I'm woefully new to the game:

In Combat do leaders/Nazgul/Companions count towards the battle's dice or are they just helping with the re-roll?

Example:

I have 5 units: 4 standard, 1 leader/Nazgul/Companion,

do I roll 5 dice or 4 (the leader/Nazgul/companion only re-rolling failures)?

Who?

Leaders and Characters don't normally add to Combat Strength. They only provide re-rolls. The exception are Companions with the Captain of the West ability listed on their cards, who do add one the Combat Strength of their Army. Remember that Combat Dice are always capped at five.

In your example, the Army would roll dice based on who the Leader in question actually was:

Leader or Nazgul - four Combat Dice and one Leader Re-roll

Character without the Captain of the West ability - four Combat Dice and a number of Leader Re-rolls equal to the Character's Leadership

Companion with the Captain of the West ability - five Combat Dice and a number of Leader Re-rolls equal to the Companion's Leadership

If you're playing with the expansion, I believe the Balrog also adds combat dice.
