How to get started with the game?

By Gwaidal, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi,

As a fan of games, and cardgames in particular, I'm really keen to start playing AGOT. Now, as I realise there are quite a lot of expansions for this game, I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on what to buy to get into the game fast?

Thank you.

1. Buy the Core Set.

2. Play it with your friends

3. Buy a Second Core Set (this enables you to begin building competetive decks.

4. Buy a Deluxe Expansion, or two or three or six (Kings of the Storm - Greyjoy; Princes of the Sun - Martell; Lords of Winter - Stark; Kings of the Storm - Baratheon; Queen of Dragons - Targaryen; Lions of the Rock - Lannister)

5. Begin thinking about Chapter Pack Cycles, and search these forums (and Board Game Geek and CardgameDB.com for more info!

Thanks for the info!

So basically I need 2 core sets, to be able to build some more interesting decks? Are 3 copies of a card the limitation for deckbuilding, and how many of every card do I get with a core set, expansion or deluxe expansion?

Any help is much appreciated before I jump into the world of AGOT :)

You can have at most 3 copies of any given card in your deck, with the exception of a small handful of cards that are Limit One Per Deck. In your plot deck, you can have only one copy of a plot, with the exception of three plots that allow you to use two of them.

Of the cards in the Core Set, the majority of them you'll only be getting 1 of. There are a few cards, mainly locations, that you'll get multiples, and there're two characters that you get 2 of in the Core Set. Deluxe Expansions contain three copies of every card, so you'll be set there.

Chapter Packs are a bit more complicated. All of the chapter packs from the two most recent cycles, Brotherhood without Banners and The Secrets of Oldtown, are printed in triplicate, and reprints of two more cycles--King's Landing and Defenders of the North--are about to be released with those numbers. The packs in the earlier two cycles are a mix of singles and triples; ten of the cards in a pack are singles, ten are in triplicate. Those will probably be reprinted eventually, but no ETA yet.

That helps a lot. Thanx!

It's not essential... but it is, in my opinion, the best way to get started.

There's loads of stuff in the Core Set that you'll want two copies of and having multiples of all the 'building block' cards it contains will let you get the most value out of any subsequent purchases you make. Also, while you're new to the game it's helpful to keep things a little bit simple, rather than diving into some of the weirder niche stuff that comes in subsequent releases.
