Couple questions from a noob

By Coys1882, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So a friend and I from work were playing last night and we came across a couple situations were we couldn't find a definite answer from the rules.

I won a military challenge with two deadly characters to his none. He had Melisandre, Stannis, Robert and Knight of the Rainwood on the table. Now we are playing assuming that he had to kill three characters - 2 for the deadly and 1 for the military challenge. He wanted to kill Knight of the Rainwood but the ability of it not being removed from play confused us. Does he soak up a kill and survive it, leaving two others to die? Or is he not able to choose that character to be killed and had no choice but to pick the other three cards?

Second he played Stinking Drunk on Ned Stark reducing his str to zero. I'm not aware of how to remove attachments so I felt like my only option was to play the plot card, that I'm not going to attempt to spell, that kills all characters in play. Did I have other options?

Thanks in advance!!

1) There are several points here

  • Claim comes first
  • Deadly only affects 1 defending character, no matter how many more deadly characters the attacker has
  • Knights of the Rainwood cannot be discarded from play, but it can be killed
  • If a character cannot be killed (like Beric Dondarion or Coldhands), he cannot be chosen for military claim or any other kill effect, so you have to choose someone else

So in this instance, your opponent has to kill 1 character for claim, then 1 defending character for deadly (if he defended with only 1 character, he can choose it for claim to avoid having to kill anyone else). Deadly is more effective in nonmilitary challenges.

2) Assuming you're playing Stark, you can play Frozen Solid on Stinking Drunk, which blanks its text box, restoring Ned's strength. If you have a Maester, you can play Ill Tidings to remove the attachment.

I assume you're probably just playing with the Core Set at this point, so Khudzlin's suggestions of ways to get rid of the attachments are cards you likely do not have yet. I don't think Stark has any attachment solutions out of the Core Set. Targ should have a few options, including their plot The Mad King's Legacy, and Baratheon has Maester Cressen, who you can kneel to remove a Condition attachment.

One thing to note is that your Eddard is not entirely useless while it has Stinking Drunk attached. He could still make use of his Keywords, so if you attacked with him and another of your characters, you'd still have Deadly, and if you won, Eddard would still have claimed power for Renown.

Thanks a lot for the clarification - we had no idea that only one deadly effect occured per challenge not per card.

Also - if Knight of Rainwood CAN be killed - what's the benefit of not being removed? I'm sure it's simple for experienced players but I'm coming up empty.

yes - we split the core set between four of us at work for our lunch breaks. Again thanks for the help guys! The way the game played out - I played the death plot card - Eddard's stalwart returned him to my discard which returned to my hand during the draw phase then back into play during marshalling. The stinking drunk attachment went into my opponent's discard pile.

Some effects discard characters from play rather than kill them (I don't know whether there are any in the Core Set, though) and these characters go to the discard pile rather than the dead pile. It's these effects Knights of the Rainwood is protected from (and cannot be chosen as the target of).

This was said above, but I don't know if it was emphasized enough to be picked up on.... Unlike military claim, Deadly can only kill a participating character. So if you let a challenge go unopposed, you don't have to kill anyone for Deadly. If you defend a military challenge with one character and then kill that character for military claim, you also do not have to kill anyone for Deadly (because there are no participating characters left).

Surely you meant deck, not discard.
