Aura and Knockback

By Darkfire14, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

An odd situation came up when an Ogre attacked Shiver (The character with Aura 4). He hit Shiver and caused a Knockback but then a debate happened of if his Aura would go off if he was shoved back into other monsters. The rules say that Aura activates if someone moves next to the character but if a character with Aura is forcefully moved into another model, does his Aura go off or not. Another question concerning Aura is if it will affect Soaring Monsters. If a monster is Soaring, they're considered +4 range away from the target hence technically they are not Adjacent. Would Aura affect a soaring monster who hasen't dived down to attack? Can a Soaring Monster do ranged attacks without swooping?

No, aura only does damage if the opponent movesinto it. If another hero knocked a monster next to Shiver, then it would activate, but not when Shiver gets knocked around.

As I understand it soaring monster are not considered adjacent to a hero next to them, e.g they also cannot be grappled. And sure they can do ranged attacks without swooping, but they also get the 4 range increase.

A figure only takes damage from aura when that figure moves, or when it ends a turn without moving. Movement of the figure with aura never causes damage. Your ogres should feel free to play murder pinball with Shiver; in fact, knocking Shiver next to other melee monsters is probably a good idea, as this will allow those other monsters to attack without taking the aura damage.

I can't answer questions involving Soar, though.

Edit: Ninja'd.

Remember that Soaring monsters are not considered Adjacent to any other figure for these purposes.

Q: How does Soar interact with abilities such as Aura,
Shadowcloak, and Grapple that refer to adjacency?

A: A creature that is Soaring is adjacent to no other
creatures. A creature that swoops becomes adjacent, as
normal. If a creature swoops and becomes grappled, it
remains at “ground level” until it is no longer grappled. In
order to be adjacent, a figure must be at range 1. Range
penalties from elevated terrain are ignored for these
purposes.

But, swooping is optional, and if the monster has a ranged or magic attack, then they are allowed to make them without swooping... but have to make sure to tack on the +4 range that the heroes would have to. I've seen it used to decent effect, especially if the monster is right next to a hero with grapple.

Another thing to remember is that aura is only triggered on the last space of knockback. For example, if one of Shiver's fellow heroes had a knockback weapon on guard, and knocked a monster through three Shiver-adjacent spaces, they would only take damage on the last space.

For details, see the example on page 23 of the original rules.
