Winter is here… To stay…
The 1st official Melee tournament for Athens Greece is History and 16 players were there to write history! Although new to the game, most players brought to the field strong decks and moments of endless beauty came to pass(spilled blood from the cards ,war cries, tears for the fallen and many more endless beauty moments )
.
With a lot of effort the Baratheon ( trait exploit / rush ) of Gio Karab won the tournament with 1st place in the first round, 2nd place in the second round and 1st place in the final table. Let’s hear it from him then…
Gio Karab :
Melee is not just another battle but a conflux of strange small battles vs 3 more players. You can fine tune your Joust deck, test it against all the houses and all the variables your meta community has to offer and when you go to the Joust tournament your deck will do 90% of the time what it was meant to do. That my friend cannot happen in Melee. There are so many variables out there that need your gaming skill and attention to be at their peak all the time. This means you cannot win a Melee tournament without forging alliances! The alliance with another player in a table, even if you mean to break it when you are near the end, is the most important thing you will do.
As I haven’t mastered yet the Ashai art of multi-presence I will only describe my games as Spartan as I can. Spartan…Greek tournament… Got it? Nevermind it was a lame joke anywayz
My first thought was to bring my Baratheon rush deck that won an unofficial Melee tournament 3 weeks ago but then I had this strange feeling that because of that, when opponents in my meta saw a Baratheon in the table they would be all over it. So… I changed the deck a lot and added some twists that could help me if things went bad. And things went bad… at the very first round… Here we go!
Round 1:
My first table was not a very good draw for me. There was a
Stark
player with heavy military and some Bolton traitor attachement that I will cover later and then there were 2 guys close friends with each other. One with a
Greyjoy
Brotherhood
deck and one with a
Targaryen
Heir
deck with no intrigue attacks.
Everything started almost as bad as I expected. Almost is the key word because although the
Greyjoy’s
player
Beric Dondarrion
dominated the table and the
Stark
player on my left with 2
Bloody Scourge
kept my characters standing else I would see my beloved
Robert Baratheon
and
Melisandre
diving to the discard pile (in greek: they would be eaten like gyros and tzatziki),Ok ok I know… enough with the “funny” greek jokes, there was a bright side after all! The
Targaryen
player didn’t have a good opener and the alliance with his
Greyjoy
friend was not well planned. The only thing I could to win this table was the
trait
manipulation combo I injected in my deck the night before the tournament. So I played
Horn of Dragons
on
Robert Baratheon
and sat in my corner with a sad look in my eyes! So when we left the 3rd
plot
I was sitting at
5 power
and
Beric Dondarrion
had
10
. I flipped
The Songs of Bael the Bard
plot and then reality struck home for all my opponents. At
draw phase
Beric Dondarrion
was right beside my
Robert Baratheon
giving me the
10 power
I needed to win and leave my opponents sad. Fortunately noone realized what I was planning to do until it was too late…
Round 2 :
The most important and difficult round cause I was joined with the 3 winners of the other tables of
round 1
. The good thing was that this time I had a female friend in the table playing
Targaryen Dragon rush

. The other 2 were playing
Martell
.
As it turned out this was the easiest round. Redirecting on me an unopposed
military challenge
that was aiming my friend that would cripple her on 1st plot because she would have to kill either
Daenerys
or
Rhaegal
, a move that met the absolute surprised look from my other 2 opponents, I locked the game and second place because after that my friend unfolded her dragons and dominated the table. 2nd place of course was fine by me, driving me straight to the Final Table!

decided to take a game off and drink greek frappe a.k.a cofee somewhere (good old ladies man Robert), only
Renly Baratheon
seemed good enough in my hand. So with
Summoning Season
I brought his second copy guessing that only the
Lannister
deck had a
Valar Morghulis
and with a
Horn of Dragons
on him I managed to win the table at the last moment, because my friend had stopped at
14 power
in the last plot (we were playing the final table so we both played for first place)!
