How often is your group 'calling for the witch hunters' to come solve their problems?

We had it happen in the scenario Karls & Scents and in Dog Eat Dog World. I've resolved to let the PCs know that there is an 80% chance that calling from the witch hunters will result in the PCs ending up getting burned alive just for guilt by association.

Thoughts?

Well in one of my games we had a Witch Hunter as a PC, soo I guess we had their help all the time? In my other game the PCs were terrified of even having a WH even look at them, let alone call one for help.

Never. Witch Hunters aren't always reliable as far as sticking to what they were called in for. Also, PCs can too easily be viewed as "the problem."

PCs are ALWAYS part of the problem. If it's not the PCs it's the players. I just can't stand players "calling in reinforcements"!

One time we were playing Call of Cthulhu and my players reasoned that "their characters would call police". During that time of my gaming history that had been occuring quite often. So I asked "them so you're going to call the police?" After five minutes we were done with the scenario. I just informed that the police came, forced the characters to leave and that's that.

Of course that approach does not work every time. But if it is at the start of a session it surely makes the players to think twice after "calling in". Later.

Stupid players... gran_risa.gif

So far, never.

First group had a witch hunter in it, and they encountered another witch hunter burning a victim.
Second one were a bunch of outlaws.

Third one, I ran the Witch's Song. I guess after that they were sort of put off to the idea of witch hunters :).
I made Krieger out to be highly manipulative sociopath while doling out judgement on the villagers. Only player that was around to see this, was our Amber wizard apprentice, which is already borderline hedgewizardry to my Krieger.

If it did happen, I'd simply ask for a time-out, and lay out the facts:
- It will take several days for the closest WH to even arrive
- They will not be allowed to leave while his investigation is ongoing.
- There is a high probability that they get accused of at least something, if not guilt by association.
- Do they still want to proceed with this?
