custom packs and "special item"

I understand that you do not get your special item when you make a custom pack, but can you choose the item as one of your 3 picks, or can you ONLY have the special item if you pick a pack.

You only get the Special Item if you pick an existing pack. I believe it was designed that way to avoid unforeseen broken combos.

well, seeing as we can't use them anyway, what broken combo's ?

You can however replace a token from a pack with a current official bonus token and still get to use your special item. So that still leaves you with some change of pace.
