ive been wondering? the trade ability with the merchant........ it sounds, from the way i read the card, like the characters you trade with have no say whether they like the trade or not. and thats how we've been playing it. is that wrong? does it have to be a trade the other player agrees to?
merchant question

No, the other players can't bargain. You choose to give him an Object and he must give you the Object of your choice. It is a useful ability, but nevertheless the Thief's Stealing or Sorceress Beguiling Ability is more effective.
I think the only point that needs clarification is the "Magic Object" issue. I think that you should trade a Magic Object for a Magic Object, but the Character Card is not explicit.
Merchant knows how to make a sale. Helmet for Solomon's Crown you say? Okay
!

The why I interpret the Magic Object issue is that on the Merchant card it states:
You may trade with any character that you land on by exchanging any one Object of yours for one of theirs (including Magic Objects).
I beleive they only clarifed that this includes Magic Objects for those who may have missed the "Object" definition in the rule book, being:
Both Objects and Magic Objects are classed as Objects. (p.12)
So if we were to remove the clarifiction from the Special Ability and read it as such:
You may trade with any character that you land on by exchanging any one Object of yours for one of theirs .
Then to me it reads as that you may trade any Object (Normal or Magic) with one of their Objects (Normal or Magic).
Hope that's not too confusing!
i agree
This sounds more effective !
I thought that the other player must agree with a bargain but as i read in this topic, he has no choice and he Must give the object that you want lol

I have another question about the merchant.
One ability on the merchant says that you can trade any object for one object in the village, market etc from the purchase deck.
Now i am wondering if you can only trade a object that is available in that space ( for example: can you trade a object for a water bottle in the village. It sounds weird to me because they are not selling water bottles in the village ! Or is the merchant's ability a exception for this?
Yeah it is pretty weird, but to my knowledge it is ANY OBJECT in the purhcase deck that is available! Enjoy!

Merchant card says "any one Object from the Purchase deck", so all but Mule are available. On a related note, Thief can take any card from the Purchase deck, so he can get Mule from Village.
Then I must say that the merchant is a powerful character.
Has 4 fates and begins with 5 gold + he can evade dragons etc
Can discard objects for gold at village and can trade objects for other objects at villagei+ can trade( actually steal) from a player lol

Bah, that's nothing. 2nd ed. Merchant could trade Gold for Object when encountering another player.
"Here, have this hefty bag of Gold and I'll take that shiny Solomon's Crown, it doesn't really go with your look"
Haha
I want to see the look from that player
i am sure he wants to take his revenge haha
Sorry for double post, but has anyone played with the Merchant yet.
He looks good but has no battle abilities.
I have tried the Merchant against a Warrior, and it was bad luck for the Merchant, because he changed into a toad and the Warrior has pick up all his money. After that, the Warrior draws some bag of gold too !
It was unbelievable, to look at the Warrior and all that gold beside his character chart. It would be a laugh if he draws Fools Gold
Sp..If the Merchant has no money, then he is not so powerful.
So if you start the game, you must buy as fast as you can, a lot of objects to get rid of that money, before anyone steals it, or before you changed into a toad

I actually drew a 1st turn Fool's Gold with Merchant in a game. He might be 2/4, but he's no worse off in battle than any other 2/4 char really. With the gold he has, first stop should be Village for some Gear. He's only been in games 3 times so far (out of 23 games) and has won 1, lost 2, but has always done well. Perhaps surprisingly well for a 2/4 char.
That's a rare situation.
I don't want to walk too long with all that gold, otherwise i end up with drawing the fools gold card lol
Off course, it was bad luck for you, to drew the fools gold on your first turn.
It would be nice if you can fool somebody else with that gold haha
Roll a dice if the smith at the village discover that you are paying with fool's gold
If so.. you are arrested and throw into a jail lol
I looked over my notes on those 3 merchant games:
#1: Dies at Valley of Fire, while 10/10 (Str/Craft). At Crown was Dwarf 5/7. Whole game took 40-45 mins. Prophetess was the 3rd char.
#2: 1st turn Fool's Gold. Gets Concealed Pouch + Talisman, very nice as Thief is in the game as well. Takes the Str-path to the Crown. Merchant wins. Priest (died, reborn as Dark Cultist) was the 3rd char.
#3: First to the Middle Region, Talisman from Warlock's Quest. After Sage is Toaded in the Middle Region, Merchant grabs his stuff. Sadly for him, Sage them pummels him barehanded at Plain of Peril, grabbing the Talisman. Dies to the Command Spell in the Middle Region, not strong enough to challenge the Sage. 3rd char started as Sorceress, reborn as Minstrel who would've won if he'd made it past the Crypt (Str 9, but battle Str was 15), he did give it 4 tries, but no luck.
I have another question about the merchant.
If you land into the village, can you sell your objects and buying things at the smid at the same turn. I am not sure about this..
