Grenades questions

By OrfeoCulzean, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hy boyz,

I have some qurestions about grenades:

1.) I compared the fire bomb (core rules) with the inferno thermal grenade --> the fire bomb seems to be less rare, cheaper , has a higher radius and do not set the target in flames...so why should I buy a inferno thermal grenade ? Or am I missing sth. ?

2.) the plasma grenade (Rogue Trader) does not seem to be much better than the krak grenade - or am I mssing something ?

Sorry for the stupid questions and thanx for your help.

Same here on the Firebomb I thought that it did great damage with the Pen 6 and only costing 5 thrones.

Well, one is supposed to be a molotov cocktail, while the other is a napalm nade. However, as is, there is really no reason to use the logical choice. I like to add unreliable and primitive to the firebomb (DH) and have 2 versions of the inferno thermal, one is cheap and a simple 40mm/grenade/RPG firestarter (20-30 thrones) and the expensive one is well, Napalm, hard to get off, etc.

I'm pretty certain the fire bomb falls into the category of needing a good old GM nerf.

Given the nature of all the other weapons, no GM in their right mind would let the firebomb stand as it is. It has way too high of a pen, way too much damage, for the cost and scarcity of the item. I would give the weapon the primitive quality.

I asked the devs about that one ages ago - the fire bomb is meant to be like a molotov, and it's Pen is meant to be 0 (zero).

Well, doesnt primitive pen get cancelled out if it goes against modern armor? Or is it halved, like what happens with non-primitive pen halving armor?

But yeah, a change like pen0 and/or primitive (I like unreliable as molotovs dont always work well) works to balance it out, as well as GM commonsense. What is a molotov doing in that 40mm grenade launcher or as a RPG? And if they carry too many, have people notice, frags are easier to conceal and not as noticeable as several distinctive bottles sloshing around.

I say keep the Fire bomb as is but reduce the blast of it to a blast radius of Blast (1/2) or no blast radius at all, because think of it, it's still a liquid that spreads all over and getting into everything and it's on fire at the time. Think about how big that blast radius is, that is a radius of 9 feet, that is a diameter of 18 feet, really wtf how much liquid is in the fire bomb, I mean really.

Still doesn't explain how a molitov cocktail could actually prove a threat to an Astartes. I get that having all that fire on you is a bad thing, but this is the difference between modern and primitive armour.
