Save / killed?

By Yusaku, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

hi, I have some questions about the timing of the saving of the Ghost. Ghost says: Any Phase: Return Ghost to its owner hand.

If someone plays Valar can I return Ghost to my hand before its killed?

Also if i choose him to for the claim of a military challenge can i save him?

Finally can i save him if he will become the target of Drogon ability? ("response" or "any phase" goes first?)

What this means for your question is that, without the word "save" anywhere in it, Ghost's "Any Phase" ability cannot be used to save him from anything. Once someone initiates an effect (like revealing Valar or choosing targets of military claim), only Response effects that say "save" or "cancel" can be used before the resolution (in this case, kills) take place. Once another effect is initiated, it is too late to use Ghost's ability to get him out of harm's way.

Ghost's ability can only be used in anticipation of harm - not to get him out of the way once the harmful effect has been initiated.

Same thing with the Dragons. Once he is chosen as a target, the effect is being initiated. You waited too long to use Ghost's ability. In general, Responses are considered part of the action that creates the opportunity to Respond, so "Responses" will always come before a new "Any Phase" effect.

Thank you very much for the very analytical answer! :)
