Killed? DIscarded?

By Kingsguard, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

If a character is dicarded, it's not "killed" right? So effects that save a character from being killed cannot save them? Do characters still go to the dead pile if discarded?

Also, is there a point where a player can kneel an opponent's character to prevent them from participating in a challenge? At what point does it become too late to kneel the character to prevent the challenge?

You will never be able to wait for an opponent to say "I declare X and an attacker/defender" and jump in with "before you do, I kneel it." You have to anticipate which characters it is best for you to take out of the equation entirely by kneeling before they get a chance to declare.

Thanks for the info
