Clarifications on "revealing" with Eleanor and Dol Guldur

You missed this little beauty in the FAQ:

(1.01) Encounter Keywords
Surge, Doomed, and Guarded keywords should be resolved any time the card on which they occur enters play, including during setup.

The FAQ amended the rules on Surge and Doomed to be enters play instead of revealed.

As far as Escape from Dol Guldur's set-up is concerned, does placing a card in the staging area during set-up constitute a card entering play? If "no," there's no problem with the way the quest card is worded. If "yes," you now get two cards attached to each objective, for a total of six cards to start your quest. Three of which are revealed.

I want to argue "no" for two reasons.

1) You have just looked through the entire encounter deck, and you know what the top three cards are (or you should). Normally when the encounter deck reveals cards, what you are getting is supposed be a surprise, however unpleasant.

2) That's 6 cards in the staging area and -1 hero for the players before the game even begins. That would make Escape from Dol Guldur as difficult if not more difficult than Massing at Osgiliath.

Disclaimer: I realize that both arguments are solely based on opinion, and carry no weight in this rules-based discussion.

True. I did miss that. But it doesn't change how I would play / interpret Dol Goldur set-up.

Place the Objectives then execute their Guarded keyword as normal.

It's the simplest and easiest solution I can see. It doesn't require a PhD in Philosophy to decipher, it doesn't have to be "fixed" by adding new silly FAQs. It just resolves the situation without further arguments needed.

The only argument against this solution is from weaklings complaining about how mean the Encounter deck is, and how bad their Heroes suffer from being hit by nasty events... So? It's Dol Goldur! It's suppose to be MEAN and hard! Stop whining! Suck it up and get a freeakin' helmet all right?

So you're saying during Dol Guldur setup, put the three objective cards in the staging area, reveal three cards for the Guarded keyword, and then attach three more per the setup instructions? I'm confused by your solution.

The instructions on the quest card cover attaching the "guards" to the objectives. There's no reason to fire off the Guarded mechanic during this particular, unique setup. It's already got that covered. The reason it is worded the way it is is because they want you to shuffle before drawing those three "guards."

The issue and ruling that this thread is discussing is whether any "When Revealed" text would apply considering the nature of this particular, unique setup.

While it may not require a PhD to decipher, it IS a particular and unique situation where we now know that something different is going to happen. The "When Revealed" isn't going to happen since the reveal is being bypassed by the quest card instructions.

And don't call me a weakling. I drink chocolate milk with dinner. I can punch holes in the sun. /flex And my helmet is in the shop...

Now you're just trolling. gui%C3%B1o.gif

What I've been hammering on about is that I think the Quest card should say something along the lines of:

"Go through the Encounter deck and find the three Objective Cards, place them in the Staging Area, shuffle the Encounter Deck and then execute the Objective Cards Guarded keyword as usual."

So I'm replacing the silly "attach" word for what I believe it should be, namely a reminder to execute the Guarded keyword.

I don't want both, to happen.
