Legends - are they good or bad for the casual player?

By Mr Moto2, in Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

Hi community.

I'm considering buying the Legends expansion, but I have a few questions some of you might have some answers or opinions on.

The Legends seem very flavourful, but they also look like cards that greatly upset the balance of the game. Basically they make me think that if you get a legend in play - you win, otherwise - you lose. I know there are ways to kill them, but they seem to be all 'up-side'. Bonuses to all zones, abilities, etc.

What do you think? Do you use them in your games? What happens if only one player draws a legend? Do the other player just cry and leave? ;) Do you have houserules for them?

- I had an idea for a houserule: Basically you leave your legends out of your deck, but close to you. If you have the ressources to play it, you play it. You dont have to find it in your deck. This means that you at least eliminate the luck-factor of 'you-didnt-find-your-legend-so-you-lose.'

Any thoughts on Legends?

It's really not that bad, and there's no need for houserules. Legends are rarely worth it in tournament play, and for casual play you don't have to worry. Some are just too weak right now to make a real difference (like Morathi), they're slow, and it's very difficult to keep them alive. You don't want to spend 5+ resources on a Legend for it to be destroyed next turn because you don't have a strong defense in every zone, and that's not something you have often. It's not wrong to compare Legends to units of the same cost - nice when you have them, but often too easily removed considering the price you paid for them, and it might have been better for your deck to just pick a cheaper unit instead that you can get out earlier and whose removal doesn't set you back as much. Kairos is about the only one for which it's different, since his effect turns already placed developments into his defenders, but you still don't see Kairos decks stomping over everything else.

My advice would be to just get Legends. See how it works for you, but even if you find your casual playing style is somehow harmed by the legends, just leave them out. There are still plenty of worthwhile cards in the expansion.

I am a casual player with Core Set, AOU and MOD. I recently got Legends and found it is a great addition. There are many interesting cards besides the legends themselves and just having a few legends as an option for a deck build is a nice addition. Additionally, I found that some underpowered races (esp. Chaos) get a bit stronger with the regular cards from Legends added. I would recommend Legends even for casual play.

Thx guys for some good answers. I think I'll give them a try :)
