Assist: is the trollslayer with a fel of 2 really helping on charm checks?

By Emirikol, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I'm still trying to wrap my head around 'assist.' It doesn't seem that someone with absolutely zip for skill in an area should be able to help assist.

For example; the envoy is trying to get lord aschaffenberg to grant them land and titles for helping root out evil in his manor. How exactly is the trollslayer with afellowship of 2 helping this discussion again?

I'm thinking of imposing a restriction that only a trained person can assist with something (in the absence of **** good roleplaying in-character).

It depends on the situation. He could be playing bad cop to the Charmer's good.

Also, you don't have to OK every assist. Why make a rule when judgement works fine?

In the end, it's only a fortune die. Considering how many I'll throw in a roll based on just situation, a single extra doesn't unbalance anything.

A few things. This echoes the "me too" problem of everyone wanting to roll every check for tracking etc.

If multiple character are trying something (tracking, persuading, whatever), I think it's often most plausbile to make the Worst stat etc. roll, and then let those with better ones assist them.

Another way to go, which I have done, is in a social situation let a charming PC be the face but then impose a misfortune die on them for every other PC who's below 3 in Fellowship. Having Mr. McBurpy von Nobathalot along with you not helpful trying to charm the Baron. Keep track of the misfortune die and if it hurts +1 Party Tension.

Overall, there's "roleplaying". So how are you helping Player with poor fellowship? "I assist" means nothing, tell me what you're doing. This is cooperative fiction, mechanics just are there to tell us what happens next when it's a question. Good idea and discription (actually, I'm staning their looking impressive with my muscles, helping the image that we're competent etc. - which is more or less what one player did in a session of mine) - great, yes that assists. Bad idea (I stand there looking intimidating - but, this is a charm check, so that actually belies the efforts of the face PC, misfortune die).

Rob

the assist gains a fortune dice and misfortune dice.

that's the beauty of this game. in other games you would have a +2 modifier cancelled by another -2 modifier and be a waste of time.

Simple.

The envoy and Lord Aschaffenberg look upon the Trollslayer with distaste as he blows his nose with a tablecloth.

The envoy turns to Lord Ashaffenberg with a faint smile.

"Lord, don't you think it would be easier to give him a shiny piece of land to go play on out of sight, rather than letting him make an attempt at socializing in public?"

The Trollslayer grins and belches while leering over Lady Ashaffenberg's low-cut bodice.

Lord Ashaffenberg sighs. "Whatever it takes" he says, handing over a purse of coins.

Well, now I know Lady Asschafen-whatever has a low cut bodice I'm definitely running that once off again...
