The Benefit of Corruption Points

By Darth Smeg, in Dark Heresy

So the new Black Crusade game introduces some mechanics that make Corruption Points useful, allowing clever uses of Infamy that act sorta like Fate Points etc. (I dunno, I haven't read the book, just seen the threads on the forum).

It got me thinking: I'd like to introduce some benefits of Corruption Points. Make it boost a psykers powers somehow (with nasty side effects, of course). Why? As a lure, a temptation to turn further to the dark path of Chaos. To scare the psyker, let him realize that the Dark Ones have their eye(s) on him.

To make it a harder choice to stay pure.

Just because :)

So what would be appropriate benefits (and side effects) of a high Corruption score?

Suggestions (drafts, for discussion):

Let the 10's digit of your Corruption Points be your Corruption Bonus (BC).

Add your CB to your Manifestation roll, just as you add WPB. However, you add +10 to all rolls on the Phenomena (and Perils?) tables when you manifest a phenomena.

Also for non-psykers:

Add your CB to your TB when subtracting from Damage caused by Psychic powers or other forms of Warp-damage. (Ie, you are more resistant to these forms of damage, as your connection to the Warp defends you). However, you also take penalties on tests to resist further corruption. (or something)

Hi Darth,

how about offering the pc certain beneficial-but-corrupting traits instead of Maligencies and/or Mutations? This is something I plan with my players since the are completely against roling for Maligencies/Mutations in Fear of getting a result that will ruin their character alltogether. Which I understand, since they do their best to avoid CP alltogether but sometimes simply acquire them (like warpshock).

I like your "CP-Bonus" concept happy.gif . I will see if/how I can integrate this into my "ideas-in-progress" and will reply a little later.

Whenever the term “session” is used, it refers to the interval between two refreshments of FatePoints

„Corrupted Frenzy“
When the pc enters a Frenzy/Battlerage, the CP-Bonus is added to all stats that will gain a
bonus from the Frenzy/Battlerage. At the end of the Frenzy, the pc must pass an opposed Willpower
test (against his own Corruption score!) or the pc will gain a CP at the end of the battle.
Once each Session , the GM may demand an opposed test (Willpower vs. Corruption) from the pc.
If the test is failed, the pc will enter Frenzy and will gain a point of Corruption afterwards

You already get benefits in the form of beneficial mutations, as well as various others if you use the system in the Radical's Handbook.

CPs should be something to fear in a DH game, not something players are trying to get, IMO. If you want that, play Black Crusade, Again, IMO.

Radical's Handbook covers it nicely. First I was trying to rack up 10 corruption to become a Tainted Psyker. Now I am trying to rack up 30 corruption so I can get Psychic Vampirism. Just imagine the healin' feeling you get from using Inferno (from Ascension) and Psychic Vampirism together. Radical's Handbook gives you one Unnatural Attribute at 90 corruption points. And of course, Dark Pacts (which I feel are rather odd now that Black Crusade is out and absolutely silent about them).

And of course, if you hit 100 corruption, you get to remake your character via Black Crusade! Hooray! In the DH/DW I'm in, 3 players, including myself, plan on having our chars hit 100 corruption eventually... 2 of our players don't.

Peer to the Defiled
The pc counts as having the „Peer“ Talent in regard to every npc with at least 20 points of corruption. The difficulty of all Malignancy Tests of the pc is increased by one step.

One who walks the same path
The pc adds his CB to all resistance test in regard to Daemons and other creatures of the warp. The pc immediately gains another 1d5 Corruption Points

Dark Epiphany
The pc can add his CB to any test regarding Forbidden Lore (Psyker; Daemons; Warp). The pc immediately gains 1d5 Insanity Points.

Warnings from Beyond
The pc can add his CB to his Awareness tests, but immediately gains 1d5 Insanity Points. If the pc acquires a derangement, it is likely one that includes “voices”.

Tongue of Bitter Honey
The pc can add his CB to every Charm and Deceive test and immediately gains another 1d5 corruption points

Becoming a strange to the Flesh
The pc can add his CB to every test to resist Shock and the loss of Fatigue. The pc loses a point of both Perception and Fellowship whenever s/he gains another Malignancy and/or Mutation due to growing distance to self & surrounding.

Those are very cool...

Aether Swirl
The pc can make his own corruption call out to the surrounding warp, churing it. This a full action (concentrate manouvre)Every psychic power or spell targeting him or anyhting within CB meters around him has its Threshold increased by its CB. The effect lasts for CB turns.
The use of this baleful power will leave the pc with both a point of Fatigue and 1d10 further Corruption points. In addition, a hard(-20) test for Psiniscience will reveal the pc to be saturated with dark powers even when he is not using them.

There's the Unholy Insight trait in Into The Storm, gained by taking the Glimpse From Beyond elite advance package, which lets you spend a Fate Point to roll against your Insanity or Corruption instead of your Intelligence or Willpower on a Test, and also allows you to gain a +10 on Forbidden Lore Tests in exchange for gaining an additional 1d10 Insanity or Corruption (because any character who's taken that Elite Advance package will already have a fair amount of one or the other).
