card specific questions from a newb

By jfrost2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi Everyone! I am just getting into this game (core set), but encountered some cards I was unsure about. Any help would be appreciated...

Hear Me Roar (plot card)

The first line of this card says "House Lannister only." Does that mean it can only be played in House Lannister's plot deck, or that it's effects only effect House Lannister characters in play?

Winterfell Honor Guard

If this card is put into play on my side by my opponent and I use the character to block a military challenge and LOSE, can I select that character to go to the dead pile?

The "House Lannister Only" restriction means it can only be played by someone with a Lannister House card. If it only affected lannister characters, it would say "(Lion icon) characters without an (intrigue icon) get -1 str".

Yes. Claim happens first, so you can, in fact, choose this character to satisfy claim. For detailed timing, see the FAQ timing chart for the challenges phase.

What actually happens is

Framework Actions in bold
Challenge Resolution (you lose the challenge)
Claim resolution (you choose to kill off the Honor guard) (the honor guard is now "moribund", ie destined for the dead pile)
Reward for unopposed challenge (presumably none)
Winner claims power for renown (irrelevant to this example)
4. (Passive Abilities triggered by any of the four previous events are resolved)
5. (responses triggered off any of the four previous events are resolved - this includes the Winterfell Honor guard response).
6. (moribund cards leave play)

In this case, even if he triggers the response (changing the control), the card remains Moribund and heads to the dead pile anyway.

1. The Honor Guards do not have a Response. The "take control if..." effect is a lasting effect that activates passively when the character participates on the winning side of the challenge. So the control change happens in Step 4 (Passive Effects), not Step 5 (Responses)

2. The Honor Guards only change control when they participate on the winning side of a challenge. So they'll never be involved in a "losing defender kills it for claim before the owner takes control of it from the winning defender." (Well, maybe with Red Vengeance, but that's about it.)

Other than that, good work on the timing of the hypothetical situation.

Hah... serves me right for thinking I remembered the text on the card word-for-word despite having never seen it played. *humbled*.

Thank you all for the detailed responses!
