Several questions from a very new player.

By aggro2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I just recently bought this game (3 Days ago), and the rules are a bit daunting to say the least. I thought I had a good grasp of them so I started a 1 on 1 game with my father. (Whom I went through the rules with) He kept asking questions that were not in the rulebook, but were fairly important.

1. How many characters/locations/attatchments can I have on the field at the same time? If there is a limit, how do you play new locations if your locations/attatchments row is full? Do the locations only apply to the round you play them?

2. If your field is full can you still play event cards? Or do they need an open spot on the field to be played?

3. What does the infinity symbol on a cards title mean? I assume that it means it is a constant effect, but what makes that different than a normal location or attachment?

4. How does the Kingsguard Title work? Can I only redirect challenges against me? Or can I redirect a challenge from one opponent to another opponent or myself? This title confuses me.

We only have 1 core set so I can't really edit the deck, and it will be a while until I can afford a second one. I grasp the general rules but there are certain things that the rules don't mention. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

It's very important to note that the rules are quite explicit; don't assume anything that isn't stated!

1 & 2 There is no limit on the number of cards you can have in play. Well, technically, you can't have more cards in play than you had in your deck, and you can't have more cards in your deck than you can "shuffle unaided" (according to tournament rules).

3. The infinity symbol is actually a carry-over from the LCG days. It doesn't have any rules associated with it, but indicates the card itself is a "Recurring" card - it has the ability to come back from the dead/discard pile (under conditions explicitly stated in the card text). So in essence, it means nothing but it serves as a reminder when browsing your dead/discard pile that you might be able to bring this card back!

4. The Kingsguard allows you to, after a military challenge has been declared against someone who chose not to (or couldn't) declare defenders, redirect it against you (and allow you to declare defenders). This can be good if you have abilities that trigger off "winning a military challenge", and it can be good to prevent someone from losing characters that benefit you in some way (keeping the balance on the board).

1. + 2. There's no limit to the number of cards you can have in play.

3. There's no rule associated with it. It is simply a visual reminder that the card can be brought back from the dead or discard pile into your hand or into play (depending on what the card text says) by its own ability.

4. Let's take a look at what the rule book says: "This title has a special ability that allows you to redirect against yourself one undefended Military challenge each round." So let's say you hold the title. Opponent A declares a Military challenge against Opponent B. Opponent A declares his stealth targets. Opponent B does not declare any defenders for whatever reason (has no eligible characters, or simply does not want to declare defenders). Now you have the opportunity to redirect that challenge against yourself, so Opponent A is attacking you with the attackers he originally declared against Opponent B. Opponent A has an opportunity to declare new stealth targets. If you do win the challenge, you move one power from Opponent A's house card to yours, in addition to any other benefits you might have from winning the challenge (for example Renown).

Since you are a very new player, I hesitate to recommend reading the FAQ document (link in my signature), because it can be rather intimidating and might confuse you at first more than it'll help. But I do want to point out its existence, because new players often don't know about. Aside from card errata, the FAQ contains a lot of detailed info on the different aspects and mechanics of the game. Have a look, but don't get to fussed about it if it's too confusing. But it'll be good to come back to once you got a better hang of the game.

Thank you for the answers! I have experience with card games but this one is proving to be pretty complicated. You have both been very helpful. happy.gif

By the way, the titles aren't used in 2-player games, so you will need at least one more player in addition to your dad and yourself (preferably 2) to try them out.
