What is the point of an "Activity Marker". I just drew a Mythos card that told me to place one, but I don't see that it has any effect.

The three Activity Markers are just used to mark places of interest to the investigators. If a rumor requires the investigators to discard an Ally in the Downtown streets, and an environment allows investigators to gain clues and spells in French Hill, you'd put two of the activity markers in those places as reminders.

I never use them. When I get a card that says activity takes place in such and such a location, I just put the card on the board location until the effect ends and the card is discarded.
