If my opponent kneels 3 characters who then die (via lethal counterattack for example), do the characters return standing or knelt as they were when they left play?

Narrow escape doesn't prevent them from leaving play, it brings them (back) into play. It would have no memory of the standing or kneeling nature of the character. The characters would be standing (or not) depending on any effects that affect their standing as they come into play.

By the way, you surely mean Catelyn Stark (LoW), she is the one who would go back to your hand at the end of the phase. Catelyn Stark (KL) is the one who can prevent INT challenges against you.

So if I understand you correctly it would shake down like this. Opponent initiates his first challenge and attacks with 3 characters, I play Lethal Counterattack, his characters die, he plays Narrow Escape and his characters come back (standing unless I do something to kneel them) and are available for intrigue and power challenges? Also, am I correct to assume that power on those characters is lost?
